  1. God, maybe I'm overgeneralising or just have had a few bad experiences that don't represent anime as a whole, but what happened to just trying to tell a normal story with a beginning, middle and end?

I feel like media these days has become hyper-aware of the tropes and genre trappings of "typical stories", and everything tries to be clever, self-aware and "subversive". Now, obviously, being aware of stale conventions can inspire you to do something original and interesting. The problem is, so much anime feels the constant need to lampshade the fact that it is subverting tropes, in turn drawing MORE attention to the artifice of the writing! Everyone wants to be the next One Punch Man, "X anime genre but we parody and make fun of X genre's tropes". I read old books and miss the days where people just wrote about characters being places and doing stuff, and it wasn't all about clever subversions and ironic parody.

I feel this somewhat ties into the problems with Gekidol. Nobody can JUST make an acting anime or an idol anime – they HAVE to play 4d chess with their characters, tone and plotlines, seemingly to impress upon the audience just how clever and "not like the other shows" they are.

  2. This was a perfect anime. Sad that all the intricacies were lost on you. I'd rate it as high as high as the Monogatari series or FMAB, but I bet you're not a fan of those either.

  3. Some people recommended me this because they said it had Madoka-levels of Plot twists and darkness, it was just a waste of time, it reminded me of Magical girl site because I watched it for the same reason and both of them are just anime that try way too hard and fail miserably.
I didn't see anyone else talking about Gekidol, I should have taken that as an warning, I feel like I wasted my time.

Plus, I thing the writers just made a whole lot of nonsense and random stuff and they thought they did something really deep and intelligent 💀

  4. I actually liked this anime a lot. Although, I wasn't a huge fan of the change from theatre angst + creepy robot to larger than life sci-fi time travel. I loved how the show alternated between light hearted and creepy. I'm a jaded audience that doesn't scare too easy from visual media, but the back and forth had me really creeped out on certain scenes. I loved the dynamic between Seria and Airi, especially from episodes 1-6. They're two girls from different worlds trying to figure out how to connect with each other while carrying a lot of emotional baggage. And I thought Kaworu's backstory was just incredibly interesting! It gives her a lot more dimension and makes room for a ton of speculation.

ALTHOUGH, I feel like the plot might've been better if it were spaced out and didn't connect with such a massive planet wide time travel plot. Also, a lot of things felt like they either popped up out of nowhere or disappeared without a trace. The doll character had so much potential as a character. Who is she? Where did she come from? Who made her? How the hell did she end up at Alice In as an acting prop? By the end, I still have no idea what the answer is to any of these. Remember Kaworo's backstory? It also made the plot so convoluted that I had to do multiple google searches to keep it straight. I'm still annoyed the show brought up a possible yuri plot and then dropped it off the side of the Earth as though it never existed. (They actually kissed, dangit! You can't just say "sorry," go to a jealousy arc, and then move on!)

All in all, I really enjoyed the anime despite it's faults. It was a fun series to binge all in one day while I ignore my responsibilities.

  5. I did enjoy the anime. The characters are cute, the psychological depth was good and the dark plot twists were intriguing. However, it does have its flaws. I was disappointed and confused by the poor execution. They tried to stuff in way too much in way too few episodes, leaving them with not enough time to properly explain everything. The audience is left with unanswered questions and a couple of last episodes that don't really make sense. Regardless, it was a fun ride. I at least enjoyed it enough to finish it, so there's that. I rate it 5/10.
