**SKY NO DAIBOUKEN – STORY SO FAR:**

Sometime ago the Gintama Rewatch was nearing it’s end and the Dark Lord u/Shocketheth was terrorizing everyone with his constant trolling and lies.

Then a brave hero u/KendotsX [stepped up](https://i.imgur.com/YE4WeNP.jpeg) and [executed the evil Dark Lord](https://i.imgur.com/QLzPTHj.jpeg), which has started 12 years of peace. [Sky no Daibouken spoilers] [Kendots also stole my toiler paper.](https://i.imgur.com/3jk8Npk.jpeg)

Now jumping into present time, present day the resident of r/anime island, and the Main Character of Dragon Quest: Sky no Daibouken Rewatch u/Shimmering-Sky is dreaming of becoming a Hero capable of defeating the Dark Lord.

And thus, the story begins.

# WAIT WAIT WAIT! THAT’S NOT WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED!

*Let’s start from the beginning.*

**Welcome to Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken Rewatch!**

Right from the beginning, accompanied by fantastic Dai no Daibouken soundtrack composed by [Yuki Hayashi](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=118529), I will state that there were a previous attempt of Toei Animation to adapt the DQ: Dai no Daiboken manga in 1991, but unfortunately the anime got axed in 1992 and we got what equals to like 1/5 of the whole story.

Speaking of the old anime, I need to tell you about [Koichi Sugimiya](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=9738) who composed the soundtrack for Dragon Quest games, and his songs were used in The Adventure of Dai (1991). And also there is the whole Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken manga that I won’t be mentioning as the new anime adaptation toned down certain pervy jokes typical for the era from which the OG Dragon Ball came from. But more of that later as I will bring a short comparison to show you how much were the pervy jokes toned down.

*Now with this being said, let’s move out and start talking about the actual episode.*

**Hero making a party, and going on an Adventure to defeat a Dark Lord threating the existence of the World.** A tale that’s ancient by today standards, but this story created back in 1989 followed a fresh recipe (believe me, it was fresh in 1989 OKAY?), where the Dark Lord was defeated years ago, and the story follows a young boy named Dai who lives in a peace while he dreams about becoming a Hero.

Now before the real story kicks in, and the Dark Lord will start threatening the world again, we are going to make our stop on Dermline Island.

Here the various monsters from Dragon Quest games lives in peace with our main character Dai accompanied by his friend Gomechan and his adoptive father Brass, when suddenly the [Fake Hero’s party](https://i.imgur.com/xeUzlcH.jpg) which is basically a parody of the intended party from [Dragon Quest III](https://i.imgur.com/gh9uWih.jpg) disrupts the peace to fulfill their own greed and ambitions.

**And why this episode was about some Fake Hero’s party when the story of Dai no Daibouken is about Dai going for an Adventure?**

Well, the first episode adapted chapter 1 and 2 that same as episode 2 (chapters 3-5) and originally Dai no Daibouken was supposed to be miniseries, but due to demand, the Dai no Daibouken turned to be a serious story with overarching plot that will start from chapter 6 which will be adapted in 3rd episode.

**SEIYUU’S CORNER:**

Dai is voiced by [Atsumi Tanezaki](https://myanimelist.net/people/17215/Atsumi_Tanezaki) known for her roles of Mayu Arita from Death Parade, Anya Forger from Spy X Family, and Frieren from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. In 1991 Adventure of Dai, Dai was voiced by [Fujita Toshiko](https://myanimelist.net/people/483/Toshiko_Fujita) who unfortunately died in 2018, and her most notable roles were Taichi Yagami from Digimon Adventure, and Mamiya from Fist of the North Star.

Brass is voiced by [Ogata Kenichi](https://myanimelist.net/people/481/Kenichi_Ogata) known for his roles of Principal from To LOVE-Ru, Sorahiko Torino from My Hero Academia, and he also voiced [Santa](https://myanimelist.net/character/42429/Santa) from Gintama. In 1991 Adventure of Dai, Brass was voiced by [Tanonaka Isamu](https://myanimelist.net/people/1427/Isamu_Tanonaka) most notable known for his role of Igor from Persona series.

King of Romos is voiced by [Ikkyuu Juku](https://myanimelist.net/people/10183/Ikkyuu_Juku) known for his roles of Professor Reinhart from Pluto, Valentin Sokolov from Baki, and Sergeant Gross from Attack on Titan. In 1991 Adventure of Dai, King of Romos was voiced by [Azusa Kinpei](https://myanimelist.net/people/10962/Kinpei_Azusa) with notable roles of Muuri from Dragon Ball Z, Mamiya’s Village Elder from Fist of the North Star, and Wilhelm von Klopstock from Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

1. My first impressions as first timer was that this looks like a generic shonen.
2. Summoner. It’s the most intriguing class to play as for me.
3. Honestly I didn’t mind the CGI in this.
4. ED is meh for me, and the OP, well it took some time while it grew on me, and I kind of like it? It’s nothing spectacular, but also it’s nothing bad. So I would say this OP is average.

Ah, another beginning, another intro sequence that I forgot all about until I rewatched it that has *all* the cool hooks.

But more importantly…

I love Brass. He doesn’t stop Dai from being a hero when he needs to be one most and even sets him up for success despite his lack of magic experience by leaning on his biggest assets: His attitude and his friends.

Dai then proceeds to have a Pokemon Battle where you can send out everyone at once, it’s awesome.

The end of this episode got a really good laugh out of me.

1. Man I wish I still had those. I remember thinking it was a bit rough around the edges, but I was excited to see where it was going.

**1st** **~~Dai~~** **Popp no Daibouken Rewatch, Sub**

I watched this show before I got into DQ games so at first I wasn’t really aware the DQ monsters but rewatching it again, I can easily spot a lot of them. I watched it while it was airing and I have to say that the show really was kinda underrated. It was made in the 90s so there are some shonen tropes here and there but still it’s one of the greatest shonens and I was overjoyed when I got to know about the rewatch.

The first episode was the introduction of Dai and the history of how the Hero defeated the Demon King and brought peace to the world. I didn’t know at first but I got to know later that this started as a One-shot and only continued to be serialized because it became popular. The first 2 episodes are adaptations of the one-shots. Even though these were one-shots, I must applaud the author for tying in some of the things that happened in this episode with the rest of the series. I even decided to pick up the manga in the middle and started to just keep up with the anime so that I don’t get spoiled and it was definitely a great experience.

Also, I loved the soundtrack by Yuki Hayashi and these OSTs have a special place in my heart and so I decided to document the OST as we rewatched it. Do let me know it if it could made better. I’m thinking of doing things like Eyecatch and Preview once and focus on the main OSTs.

**QOTD**

**1.** My first impression was that it was like a DBZ-like shonen and I watched it because someone recommended it. I must say that I wasn’t expecting the greatness that lies ahead. Also, since the had Golden Cylinders in the episode, I thought those would be a recurring thing when I first watched it.

**2.** Like Dai said, I want to be a Hero because it’s cool. But the real reason is that even though you’re never great at anything, you’re kinda like a Jack of all trades, Master of None and it’s always great to have multiple options.

**3.** I don’t really mind the CGI when it’s used on monsters and stuff but I didn’t like it when it is used on main characters and there are some scenes in the upcoming episodes that I think shouldn’t have been CGI but I felt the CGI usage did lessen as the show went on.

**4**. I used to love both the OP and ED when I watched it and still love them but these two are definitely not my favourite ones from the show.

**First Timer, Sub**

Hello! I’m still very much a newbie when it comes to Dragon Quest, having just recently played the first game on the Switch, I decided to hop into this rewatch and experience the series in anime format, with Dai as our protag. Blame it on Gintama, for getting me interested in the series as is lol.

So yeah, we start off with the lore about the hero defeating the Dark lord and bringing peace to the world.

We’re introduced to Dai, who reminds me alot of young Goku or even Gon from Hunter x Hunter and his guardian Brass, who is training him up to be a mage on dermline island where monsters of various kinds inhabit. “Heroes” arrive on their island and attack them, taking the golden metal slime, Gomechan. Dai and Brass storm their ship off shore and use the magic cylinders, which carry monsters inside them, Like a green Dragon and others off the island and defeat the Fake heroes. The King of Romos rewards Dai with the crown of champions, which Brass hides because he wants Dai to be a mage. Some time later, princess Leona arrives on the island seeking help from the hero Dai.

**Questions**

1. So far, its just your usual hero origin story, but it was fun nonetheless.

2. I don’t have one. I kinda of like aspects from different classes.

3. Yeah, it was inoffensive, done well enough.

4. I’m leaning slightly to liking the ED more than the OP, but both were pretty solid.
