北越戦争後の越後方面は同盟軍が会津藩の国境の津川での防衛に成功しており、母成峠が落ちるまで一万を超える新政府軍を僅か千人の兵で防衛していました。津川を明け渡した後も河川を挟んだ防衛戦を展開しておりこの方面の会津兵は有名ではありませんが会津の名に恥じない精鋭がそろっていました。
寄合白虎隊はその精鋭部隊の一つです。彼らはヤーゲル銃でスペンサー銃を扱う新政府軍と戦い、勝利しています。（死傷者は倍の数かつ装備も劣るという状況で新政府軍と互角）
この方面は長州藩が務めており、長州兵は母成峠が敗れるまで会津藩領に入れていません。また、会津藩兵の抵抗も激しく、多くの死者が出ています。（長州兵が会津領内で暴行する暇があるとはとても思えない）
有名な士中二番隊ですが実は連発銃を装備していました。理由は会津藩の武器の供給係を刀で脅し、良い装備を手に入れたからです。（12歳の戊辰戦争より）
士中2番隊はよい装備を手に入れたにもかかわらず2日で壊滅し、寄合白虎隊の方はっ悪い装備にもかかわらず70日も戦い抜いています。
白虎隊の事例を見るだけでも会津の歪んだ史観がみえます。
大村益次郎は会津攻め派じゃなかったんですね。確かに仙台藩領で攻勢に出て緩めの降伏条件でも出せば、ドミノ倒しで降伏してたそうな感じはします。現代からみれば無益な内戦だから被害最小で終わらせるのが合理的で大村の案がベストだとしか思えませんが、当時の当事者にしたら会津攻め潰す方が当然だったんでしょうね。
