  1. Saw this in the 80's, then a few times in the 90's. A couple more in the early 00's when we heard about the remake. Then after seeing the remake, I watched it again so I could see a good movie because the remake was garbage

  2. In the late 80s, you could split everybody into two groups:
    1) people who have never seen Red Dawn, or
    2) people who have seen Red Dawn at least ten times.

  3. KIds who didn't grow up during the Cold War can't imagine this movie which is why Jen was freaking out when it first started. However, this came out when I was 12 and seemed entirely plausible. There is some truth here in that the Soviet Union knew during the Cold War there was no way to take America in this way as there were more guns in the country than even people. Russia loves wars of attrition but even they opted out of that one.

  4. I saw this when it came. I love John Milius and this film but I remember telling my HS friends at the time, who where essentially Reagan Youth, that it was nothing but Reagan propaganda I still think that.

  5. There's a movieabout WWII where something like this really happened. It's called Defiance starring Daniel Craig, about two brothers who organized resistance in Russia against the Germans.

  6. This is a GenX staple. This takes place during the waning days of the Cold War. Back then we had this fear that the Soviets would invade at some point. This movie epitomized the general feeling of the times. The movie was filmed in Las Vegas New Mexico and during the parachute scene one of the stuntmen got in a tree and hung up. He was dressed like the invading soldiers and almost got shot because some of the towns people didn't know what was going on and that a movie was being filmed.

  7. I first saw this film shortly after it came out. While I admire the acting, the cinematography, and the writing, I must say that I hate it with a passion. I believe that it is a paranoid, manipulative, psychologically unhealthy, jingoistic fantasy. I believe that it was created as a response to “The Day After,“ a TV movie that detailed the horrors of nuclear war, specifically a nuclear war against the Soviet Union. This film perpetuated the myth that Nicaragua was a stepping stone for a planned Soviet invasion of the United States, pretty much directly legitimizing the Reagan Administration’s support for the Contras. It is propaganda. It was also, up until that date, the film with the greatest number of individual acts of violence.

  8. This came out when I was 9. I grew up across the street from one of the rare Nature preserves in NYC. We all had a lot of fun playing Red Dawn with our water guns, back in those weeds. Good times. John Milius is a great director.

  9. Hey Jen if you see this, can you tell Tara I hope she's doing well. She's had an impact on yt and I hope she comes back soon, if thats what she wants to do and if she can make it work. 👍

  10. This movie's modern reception is quite varied. From "republican fantasy" to "just a product of its times" and of course, there's always some nostalgia from the people who watched it in the 80s when they themselves were teens – but there's general sense of certain lack of realism and a lot of exaggeration. But is it justified? Just three days ago Russians hunted down two Ukrainian sixteen year olds in occupied Berdyansk, after they killed two representatives of occupation authorities who came to arrest them for suspected "terrorist" activities. Teens were already arrested once in 2022 and tortured in reeducation camps and they clearly have very strong but justified ideas about getting locked up there again.
Of course the movie is exaggerated, it's Hollywood. But the core idea behind it is not. And if it feels to you like a fantasy, be thankful you live in the area of the world that justifies this feeling.

  11. And, I recommend, TAPS. Its a great movie. And, toy soldiers, which is spiritually a remake. Not to be confused with the 1990's animated movie of the same name.

  12. The Cuban Colonel, I loved what he did at the end. He knew they were kids but upon actually seeing one or two of them, he froze. He was already starting to question why he was there in the first place. Yet seeing the 2 boys sealed it for him. The boys were fighting for each other, he was fighting for a bullshit ideology. Just my opinion.

  13. What a load of paranoid old nonsense this is. Lord of the Rings is more routed in reality. Should have been Aliens would have been more realistic.

  14. There is a red dawn happening right now. The Russians invasion of Ukraine. And let's be honest…. it's going about as well for Russia as this movie.

  15. You did the original?! Like I always say, you rule the world. When are you going to Don a cape and just start flying? WE LOVE YOU!

  16. Thank you VERY much for this reaction. Few reactors do it. I’ve asked a number of them to, including you. I guess you saw my message.

As for the gun on that girl that you said you wanted, you can still get a civilian version of that down here in the US. Just saying.

  17. As for the influence of this movie: There is photographic proof that Ukrainian fighters spraypainting, “Wolverines!” on destroyed Russian equipment. And the Russians know exactly what that refers to.

  18. Patrick Swayze was also in : The Outsiders . With Emilio Estevez , Tom Cruise , Matt Dillon , Ralph Macchio , C. Tomas Howell , Rob Lowe

  19. The actor who played the part of the father was also in the movie " Escape From New York " staring Kurt Russell. A John Carpenter movie .

  20. I was in the US military when this came out, and there was always the possibility of an invasion of the USA exactly how it happened in this film
That big Soviet helicopter was the Hind, very heavily armored and was the mainstay of Soviet attack helicopters in the 1980's.

  21. I was 13 years old when Red Dawn (August 1984) came out during the summer leading into my 8th grade year. For better or worse, between this film, The Day After (November 1983), Threads (September 1984), and then coupled with the real threat possed by the Soviet Union and their allies, it had a real influence on me…and society as a whole.

Enjoyed your reaction to this film – one that I've seen countless times. These young actors gained a lot of exposure, if not their cinematic starts, with this production.

  22. 3:05. That’s exactly why you shouldn’t let the government track you. That’s why you shouldn’t have to report to the government, your property and assets. Whether it’s an invading force, or just your own government, who disagrees with your way of life, you should not be willingly giving them this information. Those Commies out in California trying to take our guns away, by reporting to the government You’re just letting them know who to come after!

  23. this would be NUTS if something like this could really happen, but this would be IMPOSSIBLE to pull off invading the united states like this . this movie was SO LAME!

  24. I haven't seen this movie since it came out. Never forgotten it but I had forgotten just how brutal it was. I didn't see the remake because I seriously doubt it could be as good as the original. Thanks for reviewing Red Dawn.

  25. Terrific review, as always! RED DAWN (1984) has the distinction of being the very first PG-13 movie and it still holds up as a stern warning of what could be… Also, big Swayze fan here too! You really need to screen his opus ROAD HOUSE (1989). You'll thank me!

  26. I REALLY appreciate the work that goes into making movie reactions on YT and how fickle their content ID is! Must be a pain in the butt😄 I am always happy to give a 2nd or 3rd watch. Thank you for the effort! ❤
