I wanted to apologize for my mistakes in this reaction! First, I was so sure Jinshi was talking about the Emperor being his father, that I didn't actually hear what his dream in the beginning was revealing! Jinshi now thinks the Emperor is his brother!! I am excited for that to get explored more! Also, when they said the Empress Dowager, I originally thought that meant the Emperor's wife, not his mother. I naturally assumed he had a wife for political reasons and saw the concubines for his own pleasure. These episodes made me realize that they never actually said he had a wife! I will mention and correct all this in my next reaction. Sorry for any confusion I caused! I had it explained to me on my Patreon. 🙂 Thanks for watching!!
SCIENCE TIME! As soon as Maomao started talking about the maternal lineage of the royal family, I knew colorblindness was the key. The genetic mutation responsible for colorblindness is carried in the X chromosome, meaning mothers are the primary carriers. A carrying mother has a 50% chance to pass the trait on to her child. If the child is a boy, he'll be colorblind if he receives her affected X. If the child is a girl and has 1 non-mutated X, the "normal" one will override the carrying one and she'll have regular vision. But she still has a chance to pass it on to her own kids. If the father is colorblind and the mother is either colorblind or a carrier, it's a very high likelihood that the daughter will be colorblind as well as she'll have 2 affected X chromosomes. The prince bringing in a colorblind concubine to the Shrine of Choosing indicates that both her parents are probably colorblind and/or carriers, meaning the likelihood that she's from the Imperial Mother's line is extremely high. OG Empress was making sure her bloodline would be tied to the royal family in perpetuity. (This information is going to be EXTREMELY RELEVANT to the second half of the season, so make sure you keep it in mind.)
