Can someone explain this to me? What unspoken rule am I not understanding here?

Google sidewalk rule, it’s a general courtesy when a guy walks with a girl

Its because the outer side of the street is more dangerous than the inner side. If there is an accident (God forbid), the first one to be hit is the gentleman protecting the lady.
One more tip for gentlemen is when walking down the stairs or riding an escalator, the gentleman should be behind the lady when going up. If they are going down, the gentleman should be ahead of the lady. This way, the gentleman can catch the lady if she accidentally trips.
When crossing the street, the gentleman is one the side of incoming traffic so he can shield the lady in case of an accident.
