Scariest Episode So Far! 😱 | The Summer Hikaru Died 光が死んだ夏 Episode 8 Reaction

Last episode was absolutely fantastic. We’re going to rush through this a little bit because once again, Adam has a Smash tournament. Yeah, I wanted to ask question. Did you want to talk about the thing that we just talked about? Yeah, very briefly. I just want to say that at the end of most of the episodes, even if something really wholesome happens between Hikaru and Yoshki, it’s always bookended with creepy imagery. Some examples are uh insect dying after Yoshki fell asleep smiling thinking about Hikaru. There’s also after Hikaru and Yoski made up uh images of sunflowers wilting and then in the last episode it was obviously mixing but Hikaru looking like his usual he was like absorbing him or something. Yes, exactly. And I was wondering if that was foreshadowing. Oh my god. Sorry guys. I just realized the air filter was still on. It’s cuz Adam has allergies. But sorry about that. But it’ll be gone for the rest of the episode. Anyway, maybe it was foreshadowing for something. Sorry, I was just nuts you Yeah. No, no, no. It’s okay. Foreshadowing for something scary that’s going to happen, something tragic, cuz it always makes it feel like Hikaru isn’t being genuine or that he really is a monster. It’s like suspicious. It is suspicious, but it’s contrary to what we see in the show, or maybe that it’s a red herring, that it’s making you think that this might be creepy or a bad relationship, but in reality, it’s going to be wholesome. But my favorite theory that someone said in the comments, I’m probably going to have it right here. They interpreted it as this is how homophobic people see this relationship. These are just two people who care about each other and love each other, right? But because it’s gay, it’s like scary. And just because it’s different, it’s scary. And they see them almost as doing something wrong or horrific. Right. But this is And it is ironic because it is in total contrast to what’s actually happening on screen. Yeah. So it like speaks to the detachment from what you’re actually seeing. Yes. And at this point in the story, I already don’t see Hikaru as a monster. He’s just an entity that’s not human that we don’t understand, right? And he just sees the world differently. Even though he’s done things that we as humans would think is immoral, he just didn’t understand that because he can see the afterlife and he thinks that it’s beautiful and he doesn’t really see the difference or value life. But as soon as someone brought it up to him, he immediately changed the way that he or at least he tries to understand the human perspective, which is such a green flag in my opinion. Yeah. So anyway, I just wanted to mention that. Also, the sun is beaming, so sorry, the lighting is weird. It’s okay. Just stay over here. It’s not like you have ulterior motives or anything. They’re trying to understand him. He shared the note. You were wondering if that would lead to drama between them, but they just shared it, right? That’s awesome. That’s good communication. relationship. And I forgot I was excited about this. In the last episode, they talked about Yoshki said, “Let’s try to understand what you are.” And that’s such a cool thing for them to actually delve into, like not just the show, but the actual characters. I’m like, that just makes so much sense for them to be curious about that. Yeah. Oh, really? Convenience. I mean, maybe. I don’t know. But I do see that like Hikaru Hikaru really doesn’t remember anything before he turns into. Yeah, probably. I wonder I wonder if that’s part of the ritual somehow. The cat thing. Wow. Oh my god. Oh my god. I love this. I love mystery and horror setting. What? That’s weird that he would ask this is, you know, he asked Hikaru something that he didn’t know. But I wonder if Hikaru doesn’t remember the stuff that real Hikaru was doing right before he died. Like I wonder if when he fell he might have lost a bit of his memory because you know he was on a mission to do some sort of ritual but I don’t know if this Hikaru knows that maybe okay a murder village well this adds up right it seems like this village has been doing I love that they make him seem kooky but I get what they’re saying Because it seems like this village might have been doing human sacrifices to keep this entity from coming down the mountain. And it seems like they were decapitating women and using their heads as charms that would protect them or something like that. Right. Right. Yay. I’m really glad that they’re communicating. I was more excited for her to interact with her. [Music] A and Yoski must feel so she’s so sweet about it. Oh, that’s such a sweet question to ask. Oh no. No. I hate when characters because he’s so strong. [Music] Oh, that reminds me. I’m sorry, Adam. Um, someone mentioned that in the manga, Hikaru actually fully admitted to killing the old lady. Like, he didn’t just look guilty and say nothing. In the manga, he said yes, man. I mean, like that doesn’t really change much for me because I kind of already had we could tell right from his guilty look, but I do like I like to keep in mind that Hikadu is honest and that he would be willing to just admit that. Right. That’s interesting from a character perspective. You saying that does make me like Hikaro more in the manga, but I think it’s a little interesting that it doesn’t uh overtly tell you that. Mhm. It’s It’s fun to kind of figure it out based on his expressions. Yeah. Yes. [Music] Oh, no. No. He should be more regretful. Yeah. That’s a little too cold. I know. But he’s really I wonder if this is just like optimism or positivity. Yeah. Because I feel like Yoshki is slowly becoming more accepting of Hikaru and like what he does and like his his uh inhuman morals. And I say inhuman like literally. Mhm. Um definitely but cuz he’s not reacting very hard to Hikaro saying that. I feel like before if Hikaru said something like that, he could have been like this is a monster like you know. I see what you’re saying. Yes. Yeah. Nice. [Music] That is so creepy. The way it’s just saying hi. No, no, no, no, no. They can see it, too. It might just be someone. Yeah. Oh, that’s us. And the biggest reason is that Hikaru can’t just eat it. Oh, that’s actually a great Oh, wow. If it was just a spirit, I would be like, well, Hikaru lost half of himself, so I hope he’s strong enough to win this fight. But other than that, I trust Hikaru to protect us. But now, Hikaru, if he tries to intervene like, we don’t know this guy’s deal, and he can’t just go around killing people. This probably isn’t that interesting or big of a deal. But isn’t it interesting that we associate spirits with being more okay to just kill or eat? Like, Hikaru is a spirit, too. That’s just so interesting. At least we don’t know what he is. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That’s that’s just interesting. it. But, you know, that that relationship kind of makes a lot of sense. Like, I feel like people feel the same way with animals. Like, as long as they’re not human human. Yeah. Then it’s okay. I do think it’s interesting. This is so interesting. Like, why is this a human? I’m scared. Should we keep watching? Yeah. Well, can I say at first I thought this was a hallucination that Yoshki was having because he tried to stabu. So it was like a self-image kind of thing. Yeah. Yeah. No, that’s not a Look at the way he’s possessed. He might be possessed. I I think he was possessed. Yeah. Nice. Nice. Oh, wow. Oh, no. Poor guy. And this this is probably just happening. I wish they would be honest. Oh, that’s interesting. She kind of understands Hikaru, but she doesn’t really understand the full scope of like exactly what he is right now. And I think it’s cuz he is different from spirits and right they’ve she’s never encountered anything other than spirits and they’re not communicating with her and clearing up the misunderstanding. Yeah. which kind of is really frustrating to me cuz I’m I think she would totally understand. That’s the thing. Remember, she never said what she thought out loud. Only we got to hear it when she Yes. Okay, you’re right. The flashback and everything she was thinking. I have to keep in mind that we know more as the audience than the characters. So, to them, it’s scarier cuz all they know is that she said, “You’re not Hikaru, are you?” Okay, that actually does make a lot of sense. Eat them all. Let’s feed Hikaru. Oh. Oh, wow. Is he becoming more human? [Music] Oh, whoa. after. Now, is this from him having a human form for a while or is this because he lost half of himself? No, I think it’s lost half of himself. Yeah. Wow, that’s so interesting. Oh, this is kind of like what you were saying with Asako where her losing her hearing because that was her six sense is kind of like her becoming more human. Yeah. So, them losing themselves is kind of bringing them on the same level as humanity. Yeah, that’s interesting. And I wonder if Ku could lose more of himself and eventually like completely become human. Would that be interesting? That would be almost nice cuz then maybe him and Yoshki could have a long-term relationship together if he became fully human. Yeah. And he’d probably stop being chased. Probably. I’m like I don’t know if that like that could be a separate thing, you know? Mhm. He’s struggling to read same. I’d be scared to live in a place where the locations are named stuff. I know. Like look, it’s a person. Yes. Yes. Wow. Wow. That is super creepy. And obviously this is the the same person that we saw earlier in the show. The Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The map and the when Tanaka was drinking matcha. Yeah. I love how the books are drawn. They’re so beautiful. It’s satisfying, isn’t it? This is just really cool and interesting. Okay, Ariel, how’s this librarian going to tie into this? I’m like, do you think there is significance to the to this being in the shape of a body? Like like like like I’m not saying this has happened. I’m just saying a stupid possibility like a big thing died and this is like the remnants of its body, you know, like a giant alien or a giant spirit. Yeah. Yeah, that’d be cool. He’s so awkward. The directing is so good in this show. It just gives me chills. I wonder how much he knows. Yeah. Yeah. Wow. That’s a bad Yeah, I think they almost said again though I’m like is this just the perception of people in the village? Like cuz they could just be wrong or have a misunderstanding of this. Absolutely. But I think it’s good to know that there is a difference between Hikaru and other abnormalities. Yeah. before the village split. So you should be a benevolent god until the famine. Sometimes you don’t realize that until they’re gone. Oh, he died so young. He got been sweating the whole time. I hope he’s feeling guilty. I don’t know if he’s feeling guilty about his actions. Maybe just about who he is. That’s such a scary thing to say. Yeah. See? Okay. It’s It is starting to bother. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. [Music] Yeah. See, oh my god, we were just I think we were talking about this recently, but oh, I might have been talking to Shamash about this, but that apologies can be more hurtful cuz sometimes people say I’m sorry it’ll just fix in a very empty way. Like they’re magical words that will suddenly make the person not upset or fix the situation. But I’m sorry only really has weight when you understand what you did wrong and especially if you want to change and do better. It’s usually I’m sorry for doing this. I didn’t consider your feelings. Like you can say I’m sorry plus why you did it or what misunderstanding you had or maybe just acknowledging that you were wrong and then plus this is what I’m going to do moving forward. And that is a proper apology. But most people just say the first part. I But Ariel, genuinely, this is kind of unrelated, but I’m like, Hikaru is such a good I don’t know, not even just like partner, like person. The fact that Yoshki did verbalize that death was uh not something that he should take lightly and he internalized that and in the last episode he did it so much that he used it to form his decision not to hurt Yoshki. Mhm. Um, and even now that he’s he is admitting like, “No, I don’t really understand the gravity of the situation and he seemed kind of embarrassed, but he did admit it.” Mhm. I’m like, he he’s clearly putting in work to understand. So, I I don’t know. I hope people are also understanding of his side. Yeah. I have so much to say about what you just said. First of all, uh I I agree with you. I just want you to know that. Okay. I just hope and I don’t think he will. I just hope Yoshki doesn’t give up on Hikaru because this can be very frustrating. Like, man, will this creature ever understand the human perspective? Because even if I’m telling him, you know, Aoko lost her hearing, he’s just like, well, at least she’s not dead. And like I’m telling him like, man, you know, this person lost their their mother and Hikadu doesn’t seem to feel guilty cuz you’d expect both times that this information is given that whoever caused the damage would feel guilty, right? But Hikaru doesn’t. So you can see Yoshki feeling kind of I guess like unsettled, disappointed, unsettled. like can this thing really understand? Yeah, it’s interesting. I kind of think that was last episode was Yoski giving up on Hikaru, you know? Um not just in terms of like him understanding humanity, but like in a broader sense him fitting in in this world in general. And I feel like now that I feel like the last episode was kind of Hikaro really proving himself to Yoshki. Yeah, that’s why I don’t think Yoshi is gonna give up on him. Right. So now I’m like I’m sure there will be moments where he like frustrates Yoshki just by not intuitively understanding certain things that would be obvious to him, but I really h I don’t think that’s going to happen. Can I go to my next point? Yeah. I think what Hikadu is feeling right now is shame and not guilt. I think so too because he’s mentioning like, “Oh man, did I do that?” Yeah. Oh, is everything that’s ever bad, like has anything that was bad that happened all my faults? So, it’s kind of like worrying about your reputation or what that Yes. means about you instead of like what you did. Yes. Or how that affected the individual people. Yeah. It’s more like, oh, I did a thing that’s considered bad. Like people are going to see me and not like me. Exactly. And it’s less to do with empathizing with people. Exactly. Exactly. So, yeah. I Yeah. I’m just curious if Hikata is going to be able to understand this and stop making lights. See, see, it would be cool because I don’t even think he has to empathize with people because I don’t know if he can. But I think just changing his actions would be enough. You know, I agree. But he probably is cuz he’s becoming more human. Oh, that’s a great point. That’s a great point. Oh, you know what it is? What? He doesn’t know pain. He’s experiencing pain for the first time. Oh, that’s that was established at the start of the episode. He was like, I don’t really feel pain. Well, so he doesn’t know suffering. You know what I mean? I don’t know because he clearly has felt emotional pain before this. But he doesn’t understand it. He was always like, “Is this my emotion or this Hikaru’s?” And remember, he doesn’t equate that to other people. He’s like, “I want to continue eating ice cream with Yoshki.” But he doesn’t think about how someone might feel that way about Asako if he killed her. He doesn’t think, “Oh, maybe she has friends or family who want to eat ice cream with her.” Right. Okay. But I think experiencing pain will help someone become more empathetic because that’s a classic one. This is what children learn at a very young age. Oh, really? Is that they get hit or they they fall down and bruise themselves and then they see someone else who wow has that same experience and they’re like, “Oh, I know that feeling Yeah. of being hurt.” And that’s when empathy starts forming at a really young age. But Hikadu doesn’t have that. Yeah. But he he’s going to Yeah. Okay. You specifically pointing out that he’s becoming more human really convinced me. Oh my god. Oh my god. I I Yeah, I need to see how this works cuz I’m like does the sword detect him or something. Either way, I think something bad’s going to happen when they go to I could see that. I’m like, why why else show the sword? Why show it before they meet? Yeah. It’s like finding out someone has a gun in the house, you know? Oh, whoa. This is scary. Can they see each other’s marks? Just his eye. I wonder if they could already now that they have this level of trust and hopefully he can put it back if Yoshki feels comfortable doing that. I because I really and also this is just unnecessarily dangerous because if this breaks apparently Hikaru dies or something. So it’s just it weakens him. So he can’t protect Yoshki. Right now Yoshki has a physical tangible thing that could kill Hikaru at any point. And honestly, it could kind of put a target on Yoshki. Exactly. Yeah. So, this just seems bad all around. So, I’d really hope that they’d be able to put it back. Yeah. And maybe, you know, would be crazy if Kur Bayashi teaches Yoshki her slapping powers and then and then Yoshki ends up being the one protecting Hikaru all the time. Well, yeah. I’m like, that’s crazy. Like, is there something that a human can do in order to fight spirits? Yeah. Or clearly there is cuz she’s human. Yeah. That’s so interesting. Yeah. Training Ark. draining arc. I don’t know though because I’m sure Hikaru was still there. I wonder if she’s going to be accepting of Yoshki’s decision to still be with Hikaru. Oh my god, you’re so right. I forgot she’s going to meet like actually meet him because she saw him and got scared. Yeah. But now they’re going to interact and I’m really excited to see what that entails. Yeah. and if this is going to tie in at all to the queer themes. So, so I’m just curious because not only is it interesting for these characters to interact, but I’m also excited to see if the show is going to keep doing things with the queer themes. Yeah. I I think it’s really interesting how accepting Kabayashi is going to be of Yoshki’s current situation. Yes, that’s what I’m excited to see. Yeah, dude. You know what would be interesting is if she learned about because I’m assuming she’s really not going to be accepting of Hikaru at first. It’d be cool if she had character development and grew to accept him. Yeah, that would that would be very satisfying. But I would wonder if she would cuz she has a lot of resentment towards these things. I’m assuming because it hurt her son. Yeah. So I it would be interesting to me if she’s found out about the bone whatever thing. Oh that is not a good thing to tell people about it. Especially someone like her cuz anyone could be like oh yeah I I accept this and then secretly Yes. plot to kill it. Yeah. Amazing episode. I love that we’re learning about Nonuki. They’re delving into his past. I like the mystery aspects. The horror in this episode was on point. It was so good. Like the one that got me, which is totally in line with me as a person because I’m not I haven’t been afraid of ghosts or anything supernatural since I was little. I’m actually just terrified of people. Like the thought of someone breaking into my house or being in my backyard. So the guy with the knife is who scared me. That gave me chills. That’s so interesting. That’s so interesting. Does it Okay. Does it make it less scary that he was possessed? Yeah, genuinely. Wow. Because is it because it’s less real? Yeah. Wow. That’s so interesting, dude. Cuz in our world I that make like explaining it to me. I understand what you’re saying. Yeah. Yeah. And I’m not really susceptible to jump scares, right? It’s not really. Sometimes if someone else is scared, I’ll feel that and I’ll jump too like empathy jump scare. Is that my empathy? I think that’s your I don’t know if we’ve said this before, but my empathy stat is max. He’s minmaxed in empathy as a So I do think I get jump scares if other people around me are scared. But you could see if we play it back like it didn’t scare me at all when he got out of the the table. And that’s how I am with horror movies. They don’t really scare you. It really has to be something conceptual like gingiito where it gets my brain like something very atmospheric scare me. But despite that h I just love horror. The designs are cool. The way they animate it and make it move. I agree. I’ve been This is why I wanted to watch Hikaru. I I saw that it was gay. I saw it was horror and I was like, I can’t ask for anything more. This is such a good mix. I’m also I I think it’s cool seeing Tanaka interact with Yoski. Yeah. He’s just been in the background for so long. Yeah. I have a prediction that I think I’m going to like his character because I feel like he’s going to be a smart character. Yes. And I think he disarms people by ask by acting goofy. Yeah. So, he’s also a manipulator. Yeah. cuz clearly he’s a deep thinker. Yeah. A great investigator cuz he clocked that Hikaru was pretending to be a human pretty quickly. Yeah. From one interaction with Yoshki. Yeah, that’s crazy. This episode set up so many things. I can’t wait for the next episode. And God, I love Yoshki. Wow. Sorry. Go ahead. You’re deep in thought. But I mean, the things that make it seem like he’s going to die is that it’s a trope. A lot of gay couples I know. I was like, really? Can’t be happy. And then also the villagers are kind of conspiring. First of all, Tanaka’s here and Hikaru has killed someone. Tanaka is here to kill Hikaru because we saw how violent he was in the first episode. Even though the couple wanted to keep that ghost and someone in the comments said that it was a ghost of their infant. Oh, even though they wanted to keep it, he still killed it. So, he clearly doesn’t care about how other people feel. He’s on a mission and he’s going to do his job. The villagers are conspiring to have this thing killed. Or at least one of them said, you know, I might be too tired of all these rituals because it seems like they’ve been doing human sacrifice. Yes.
