Episode 7 of BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!! is one of the best-directed episodes of television I’ve ever seen, making the show’s portrait of the band’s first performance not just an emotionally-powerful turning point for the series, but a masterpiece of filmmaking as well. In this video I break the episode down virtually shot-by-shot and explain how good direction isn’t just about dynamic or interesting storyboards, but how it can, as it does here, elevate narrative and character development to almost limited heights. Stay to the end, there’s some extremely important statistical analysis happening after the credits. Essay, narration, and video all by MR Bowers https://bsky.app/profile/mrbowers.bsky.social This essay was written and recorded several months before BanG Dream! Ave Mujica was released, so the analysis is based solely on the 2022 series BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!! I don’t think there’s anything in the sequel series which contradicts my analysis here, but just so you know. SPOILER WARNING: I kind of casually spoil a couple major plot points from the three seasons of BanG Dream! which came out prior to It’s MyGO!!!!!, so heads up for that. This essay also sites a number of older films, including elements which could be considered spoilers, so I’ll list them here just in case: Rope (1948) Batman (1989) Akira (1988) Steel Magnolias (1989) The Godfather (1972) Can’t Hardly Wait (1998) CHAPTERS: Intro 0:00 The First Box 02:53 Resetting 06:41 Using Space 10:12 Eye of the Storm 14:58 No Escape 17:25 Pressure Cooker 19:41 It’s Always the Quiet Ones 24:30 The Second Box 28:21 (Not) Pulling a Crowd 30:14 Sing, Girls! 31:02 Tough Crowd 35:01 False Start(s) 37:59 Togawa F. BABE WAKE UP PEAK ANIME GOT ANOTHER PEAK ESSAY
Bro just dropped 1 hour essay of peak anime.
I haven't watched it yet, but I assume it's peak as episode 7 is, please do more essays (and Ave Mujica essays too)
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ❤
New MyGO!!!!! video essay just dropped, hop on MyGANG
Loving every video essay, keep up the good work.
36:00 don't be mean to her 🙁
It really is just sublime how they were able to resolve ALL of this tension (and ALSO the interpersonal conflict between Tomori and Sakiko!) with like a one second of a speechless exchange. And in such an emotionally impactful way nevertheless.
Absolutely loved the video, and all the references to classic cinema and whatnot, and just how informative it was overall. Really made me appreciate how much craft went into this episode!
I'd love to also see you cover the 3rd episode in even more detail (it was the one that made me realize that MyGO!!!!! will be something special). Or any other episode, really. Keep up the good work~
36:18 ends up causes season 2.
Excellent video, as expected!
Seeing it dissected this way it's striking how much of the elements used here foreshadow the performance in episode ten. The thinness of the crowd allowing Tomori to spot Sakiko here mirroring how she's able to spot Soyo even at the back of a much larger crowd, which then symbolically parts for them to allow her to drag Soyo on stage. The way every single member here is on their own, barely in synch opposing how unified Tomori, Anon and Raana are in getting Soyo back there. Even Raana's transformation of Tomori's heartfelt speech to Sakiko into something aimed at the whole room, contrasts with how clearly the band is playing for themselves and towards Soyo in episode ten. And then more generally, also the parallels with the Crychic performance in episode 7 of Ave Mujica.
oh fuck yeah i had been expecting another video essay from you
Love your video.
