This is such a valuable focus—so much of what dogs need us to see is expressed through their bodies long before any behaviour escalates. I work with complex and traumatised dogs, and I’d add that reading body language is also about understanding the system state the dog is operating from.
For example, stress signals aren’t just communication—they’re physiological markers. If I see tight movement, lip licking, or scanning, I ask: what’s this dog’s nervous system trying to do right now? Are they mobilising for safety? Are they stuck between options with no clear escape?
In that way, it’s not just about spotting the signal—it’s about responding in a way that reduces load and restores choice. That might mean adjusting proximity, dropping intensity, or even helping the other dog in the space make better decisions too.
And I absolutely agree—this kind of attunement changes everything in multi-dog households and with reactive dogs. It’s not just preventative—it’s relational. Thanks for putting this out there.
Thank you!
