Monster isn’t at the top of any anime lists. Whether this is due to its unconventional storytelling or darker cerebral tone, it’s these very same elements that set Monster apart from more popular anime as a rare masterpiece that doesn’t get enough attention. A mature crime thriller from one of the best mangaka’s of all time (Naoki Urasawa), Monster offers great storytelling in a grounded setting. This makes it a different kind of gateway anime, appearing to fans of true crime and thriller stories who may otherwise never give anime a shot. Despite being renowned as a masterpiece, Monster is often overlooked by anime fans. Returning guest Gerald Lillywhite is one of them, who joins the discussion fresh after finishing the series to offer his perspective as a writer. 🤖 See us live at ‘MechaFest: An Anime Celebration’ from 8-12 May at ACMI in Melbourne! 1. @41:50 I could easily see whoever directed True Detective season 1 to be able to make a compelling version of the Live Action (I'd imagine Netflix would be in the running given they are the ones who finally gave it an official streaming home).

  2. Great breakdown guys! Monster is definitely a top 10 favourite anime of mine too. Such a well constructed psychological thriller that makes you see things from the lens of every character. I also agree that the pacing is slow and that there are a lot of characters. But they were able to have everything come full circle in the end that you then understand why there were so many characters and why they built up the backstory for each one of them that way
