I once got into a fight with a dude because a dude thought I called him gay (I didn’t). He broke my nose, left me with an almost dislocated jaw and a busted lip, and the worst is I couldn’t punch him because he wore eyeglasses. Still, I got fed up and threw a single punch at him which broke his glasses frame and he went ballistic, a couple friends pulled me inside a classroom while he was shouting and kicking the door. A teacher came running and had to pull him away and despite hearing this all from my two friends, I still had to pay the $250 for repairing his glasses and he didn’t pay a cent for leaving me with a permanent injury in the jaw nor the $3K for a nose surgery because of a broken septum.
And the worst part is, that dude ended up being gay indeed, as we found out a decade later. So, I’m guessing the principal fucked me of $250 bucks so the parents don’t say it was a hate crime or no shit like that.

One of the ways you form a proper moral compass is the 10,000lb shithammer of god falling on you if you do something like this. Throwing up your hands and saying “Kids will be kids” is doing a disservice to both the victim *and* the bully.
