  1. Can’t believe it’s finally here. Only 3 months after the Urusei Yatsura Remake ended. While I did think a Ranma 1/2 remake would happen eventually I never thought it’d happen this fast. It feels surreal. We’re truly in a Rumic anime renaissance.

So far, I love how Mappa is readapting Ranma 1/2. Their presentation seems to be much more focused on the comedy and the action compared to the original by Studio Deen, which felt a lot more like a slice of life anime sometimes. I especially love how they’re faithfully recreating the facial expressions of the characters from the manga whereas in the original it seemed more blank or serious (in the first few seasons at least). This remake is similar to the Urusei Yatsura remake in that it’s much more faithful to the manga which in this case I think is a huge positive. I like how smooth the action scenes look. It really shows how much animation has improved over the last couple decades. Never in my wildest dreams I would’ve expected Mappa of all studios to animate Ranma 1/2.

Mappa seems to be using a pastel color palette for the remake which Takahashi used in her colored artworks during her drawing Ranma 1/2. While in trailers on YouTube it looked washed out, it does look better when you’re actually watching the anime. It’s still going to take some time to adjust to for me because how different it looks compared to a lot of other anime and I’m definitely going to miss Ranko’s red hair.

It’s amazing how Ranma (both), Akane, Shampoo, Ryoga, Nabiki and Kasumi’s original voice actors have returned for the anime. Ranma and Akane’s voice actors Kappei Yamaguchi and Hidaka Noriko respectively had been quite vocal about a new Ranma anime being made for quite some time now so I’m happy that they along with all the fans finally got their wish. It’s amazing how far these voice actors have also come and how good they sound even after 3 decades.

Hopefully, we’re in for the long haul now and they’re going to adapt the ending as well as all the major arcs that the original anime skipped. I really hope this won’t be a “greatest hits” kind of deal like Urusei Yatsura was where it only covered some random chapters of the manga. Based on the leak, it seems like the first 12 episodes were probably a straightforward adaptation of the first couple volumes. I wonder what they’re going to do when the episodic stuff begins.

The elephant in the room is obviously the censorship. While I do think censorship is bad but I kinda expected it after Urusei Yatsura. But unlike UY, Ranma 1/2 has a lot more nudity in it so I was wondering how they were going to deal with it. IMO the way they chose to censor the nudity with the Barbie doll method was probably the worst way to handle it. They could’ve done what a lot of other anime does by carefully choosing a camera angle so you can’t actually see anything. Instead, they just erased the nipples and it looks very strange and distracting. I get that they probably did this because TV censorship guidelines aren’t the same as they were in the 80s-90s but they could’ve handled it a lot better. Even zoomed in or light beam/steam censorship probably would’ve looked less distracting. Oh well. It looks strange but I think it’s not going to affect the whole series too much.

Either way, I hope this new Ranma 1/2 will be a hit and do what the original didn’t or left out.

Ngl but the og version is more dramatic than the remake and I quite like it 🙂

  3. honestly impressive how good the og animation still is. I have seen last season anime with worse animation lol.

Really happy this is being remake since i really enjoyed watching it back then. Dunno if I would watch it though since there is so many other shows.

  4. After watching both the videos, I feel like the older one looks better to me coz it feels more raw and I prefer 90s animation. Now this is coming from someone who hasn’t seen both the adaptations and hasn’t read the manga. But the story does seem interesting. So if anybody who has seen it all, what would be the best way to get into this series? The manga , old anime or new anime. I have read in the comments that the old anime skipped a few arcs

  5. The new one has faster pacing, better VA coordination, and it looks better. It’s mostly better.

I prefer the Chinese tour guide not speaking Japanese very well as in the old show. I hope other details won’t be lost in the remake like this one was.

  6. I have to say the ’89 version is amazing. Damn it is better animated than most of the anime we get today.
