Glad you're pairing these together!
She say's she can't guarentee that she'll love her, but her actions speak otherwise. Literally the only relative who stood up for her and considered her feelings, taught her the importance of making amends with friends after fights, and gave her comfort when she felt lonely and vulnerable. She definitely deserves to be her guardian, she manifests the purest of love and protection. She's mothering and can't even see it.
I think Makio told her friends that she's barely related to Asa because during her sister's funeral some other relatives were talking between themselves and I seem to remember they said some throwaway bit of dialogue about how Asa isn't actually Makio's sister's daughter and she's actually a distant relative she was raising as her own.
That means Asa is also just distantly related to Makio on top of not knowing each other, though I think in their case it literally doesn't matter how close their blood relation is. Makio still stepped up and it's clear her whole thing is her beef with her late sister and the fact that she's a loner and dislikes being around people, and not so much Asa in and of herself and whether she is or isn't her niece by blood.
It would also kind of explain why nobody else seemed to want to take Asa, and why Makio literally said she wouldn't stand by and let Asa be passed around a bunch of people who didn't want her, which I'd assume is kind of what already happened to her when she was younger until Makio's sister stepped up herself.
As for whether Makio's sister was really that mean, I'm inclined to agree with you and Makio's probably gaslighting herself into remembering a very biased version of her sister based only on their worst interactions that she can't forgive.
In the previous episode when they went to clean out Asa's previous aparrment Makio found some of her sister's clothes that were the kind she never saw her sister wear and she remembered Asa's mom would criticize her for wearing that exact style. So either Asa's mom chilled a lot over the years during their estrangement, or the version in Makio's head is not really that accurate and she doesn't realize she's portraying her as a cartoon villain in her memory from the p.o.v. of a much younger kid she no longer is.
At this point, I'm expecting Makio to pull a Frieren and realize it's too late to get to know her sister and she wasted those years, only instead of wandering off collecting spells and forgetting to check in, she spent them being angry about dumb stuff she blew out of proportion and refusing to talk to Asa's mom.
Totally agree, more people need to be aware of this anime and watch it.
