However, Gaku suffers a major setback at the Mathematics Olympiad and gives up on becoming a mathematician. Gaku, who is no longer a scholarship student because he was unable to represent Japan in the Mathematics Olympiad, works part-time at a student cafeteria, where he meets the young genius chef Kai Asakura through the Neapolitan he makes for dinner. Feeling insulted by Gaku, who has lost his enthusiasm for mathematics and won’t even take part in math contests, the president informs Gaku to withdraw from the school and immediately repay his scholarship. Gaku, who has fallen into a predicament, is forced to make a “certain choice” to revive himself by Umi, who has been invited as a cook for the chairman’s dinner. Gaku assembles recipes as if calculating, using delicious food as a solution. Umi says, “Mathematical thinking is for cooking,” and invites Gaku to the world of cooking.
