City the Animation – Seasonal Review
City the Animation is an absolute killer of a show and an insane testament to the animation chops of the people over at Kyoto Animation. Each episode is a collection of two to five short stories of a slapstick or absurdest nature, very comic book in terms of its humor. But as the show goes on, more and more characters of the city are layered on top of each other, creating this twisted web of connections and people who make up life in the wild world of the city. Though this is very goofy in the momentto moment stories, there is a throughine of community, cherishing your loved ones, and making the most out of what little time we all have together. There’s so much heart on display throughout City that even if it’s not always the focus, City is definitely one of the most feel-good animes of last season. And the animation is absolutely bonkers. All the artwork from the characters to the backgrounds is made with a brush pen, meaning no erasing. Imagine drawing all of this knowing that one mistake could ruin the whole page. Add on the fact that Kyoto Animation does essentially all of their drawing analog style to this day, and this is all the more impressive. Many, many episodes feature sweeping, beautiful expressions of the sheer talent they have over there. But even the less intense moments, look at how the backgrounds pop against the characters. There isn’t a frame of this show that isn’t gorgeous to behold. Kyoto is high-key bragging in every episode of City, and with art like this, they have the walk to back up the talk. It’s beautiful, it’s heartfelt, and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. 7 out of seven. Absolutely perfect show and my favorite of last season. We will look back on this as one of the animation great someday. Mark my words. If you want to hear more opinions on anime that came out this season, specifically Call of the Night and Danto Dan season 2, watch my video about anime fan service done right, at least in terms of telling a compelling story. I hope to see you there. Leave a comment or something. I don’t know. Engagement.
