City: The Animation Episode 1 – Happiness – Animiddo Reacts
Hello YouTube and welcome to a new series on the channel here today. Today we’re going to be watching City the Animation. Very very very very excited to be checking this one out from Kyoto Animation, their newest thing. It’s very current. It’s very new and I want to check it out. So yeah, we’re going to be watching episode 1. First, let’s take a step back before I get to all the really nerdy stuff about why I’m watching it. But hello, Hi. I react to anime. If you haven’t seen the channel before, I like to slow down a fair bit, talk about the episodes for a fair chunk after they’re done, discuss what makes them great, I guess, is the way I would describe it. Yeah. Uh, and normally I do polls on the channel, so I I’ll poll my audience to see what they would want to watch next. This is one that I’m kind of dictator slotting in there, and there’s multiple reasons for that. So, for a start, I’m coming right off the the heels of Saretso Sensei, which again, I haven’t seen City yet, but I’m going to imagine it’s a very different show. Um, Saretso Sensei, very, very good. It stressed me out. It stressed me out a lot. So, the thing that I’ve chosen to do is put something here that’s at least a little bit light or a little bit, you know, slice of lifey, funny, comedic, maybe at some points hype. uh instead of something where I need to be, you know, pausing every two seconds to think about some esoteric reference from, you know, 20 years ago. So great, I want I want shows like that. I couldn’t find enough to put on a poll really that I actually in my heart of hearts wanted to watch and that I thought would be a good fit for the channel. So I decided to go back to my latest poll, which was one for recent shows. I’m doing Topi at the moment as a result, and went to the runner up on that one because it fit the criteria. I want to watch it. People want to watch it, too. At least a few of them. Not as many as Taki, but a few of them. And it’s short enough that I think that I can just kind of get away with just putting it in here. So, that’s what we’re doing. I’m very excited. Uh, we’re going to pop over to A&N first and foremost, though, and I’m going to have a look at who made this sucker, which again, in this case, it may be a little bit redundant. I’m just going to put that out there before I go, you know, too crazy in here. um because it’s Kyoto Animation and Kyoto Animation is very insular. So you look at these names that’s a very famous Kyoto Animation name. A few more of these names here like very recently did Sand Euphonium. Very recently probably did work on Sand Euphonium. Like this is just another random one. This is this is Taka Yamamura. Um those are all Kyoto animation shows. So, we’re kind of trying to kill two birds, one stone here. Instead of naming all these individual people, even though again they’re top of their line, amazingly talented people what they do. We’re just going to kind of talk about Kyoto Animation in 2025 instead. No, actually before I do that, there is one thing I should say. This is Kyoto Animation adapting a work of Kayichi Arawi, right? So, we’ve done that before. It was called Nichi Joe. It was very good. Uh the only thing is it was Ishihara not Ishidate. So sure Ishihari was working on um San Euphonium as well. So like I don’t know what they just decided to mix it up I guess. As I’ve said before again such an insular animation studio that again everybody’s worked on everything. So it’s not really like somebody stealing somebody else’s kind of baby per se, but I just found it curious I would say. So, I mean, anyway, Kyoto Animation, um, maybe a little bit more this way. Yeah, that’ll work. Um, they’re very good. I don’t know if you know this, but they’re very they’re very good at making anime. Just off the top of my head, if I scroll down a little bit further, they’ve made my favorite anime. It’s that one or that one’s pretty good, too. Or if we scroll down a little bit more, this one equally as good. So, I’m a big Kon guy. I love Kon. Once again, Liz and the Bluebird. Probably my favorite movie. Like, full stop. It’s fantastic. I’ve reacted to it on the channel before. It’s just it’s elite. I mean, literally, I think I’ve liked everything that I’ve watched from them. Beyond The Boundary, I’m a little bit, you know, on. But the rest of them are they’re at least they they they go from good to great to fantastic. Like they’re they’re all positive on the on the scale, I would say. But if I had to shattered another couple, Hawka, San Euphonium also done it on the channel. Love planet after story, Silent Voice, anything that um kind of Nako Yamada touched as well is just out of this world. Disappearance, fantastic film. Like again, these are the people that are now working on City. City’s going to be good. I’m telling you, it’s going to be good. It has to be. That’s obviously omitting the the other thing which is the Kani fire. So obviously terrible, but I think it’s been proven that coming out of the other side of that, Kyani is just as good as ever, right? Sound Euphonium was fantastic. It was so good. I really even loved that season of Dragon Maid they did. I thought it was really well done, too. You could argue they’re a little bit slower now, but I don’t know. They got their fingers in a lot of pies, too. It’s Yeah, it’s an interesting one. And again, I know there’s some more like nerds that could go into like specific Kyoto animation politics stuff like, “Oh, this person’s an upandcomer. this person’s been chosen. I will say I believe episode six was the episode that everyone was freaking out about on on social media about it being fantastic. So, I think it’s episode 6. It’s six or five. It was one of the two. This would track to me cuz he’s he’s very good at his job. Oh, another thing is these two up here are relatively new in my research as well. So, again, it’s it’s adaption script writing. So, it’s a little bit different, but just wanted to note. Now, one that caught my eye as well was music by Piranh, which you know, you could tell from that they don’t really have much on ANN, which sparked my interest. Right. I went over to rateyoumusic.com, another one of my favorite websites, of course, and found that there were a swing kind of band, I guess, founded in the ‘9s, and that they haven’t really released anything for a very long time, at least not that’s on radio music. I don’t know. I’m not that into the Japanese music scene, obviously. So, I mean, that’s cool. That that that tells me artistic intent at least. They’re not just getting some random nobody. They’re getting a band that they actually really wanted to do this thing to do this thing, you know? And in kind of everything that I know about the show and the kind of feeling it’s trying to, I guess, get out of here. This would make a lot of sense, I guess. I I think Nit Joe had a little bit of a, you know, classical instrumentation thing going on. it. It’s been a long time if I’m honest, but I think so. Maybe. I don’t know. It’s one to watch at least going into this episode. I wanted to look if there was anything interesting going on with the color work as well, which is one of the things that I’ve seen in the trailers that’s been huge. But no, this is just the normal Kyoto animation color person. So, sure, go off, I guess. Just Yeah, it’s it’s Kyoto Animation time, everybody. They’re they’re probably going to hit it out of the park. Let’s be real. Now, over here as well, this is something I did know. So, normally I don’t like looking at character names or voice actors or anything until at least I’ve done episode one and start to hear some voices. But the this I already knew about, so I guess I’m spoiled on it. Aki Toyosaki. Um, my favorite voice actress. Yeah, she’s very very very very very very very good. You may have noticed before that I said I love Kon. I love Yui. And this is Hueie from Kon as well as myriad other fantastic roles. Just recently I did Penguin Drum. She was great in that. Love me some Yuru Yuri as well, which she’s great in. She’s just really good. She’s a star voice actress, I would say. Very like expressive and just knows what to do. Just [ __ ] gets it, you know. Now, I’ll skip one here because this is another one I’m well kind of versed in. This is Yui Ishikawa. Um, another very good voice actress. Uh, Violet Evergardarden. She’s Violet. She’s great in that obviously. uh generally plays your I guess you’d describe them as the quieter cudray types you would say. Think 2B from Neo Automter as well. She’s she voice acts her. So that kind of vibe generally if we’re kind of taking our kind of trio here in the same way as a niche trio then you know you would be the expressive one, you’d be the quiet one. Unsure about you. Now I know that Mikako Kamasu is a famous voice actress but I’m not particularly familiar with much of her work. I’ve had a little bit of a squeeze at the the old A&N list here, but nothing really caught my eye. So, I guess we’ll see. She’ll be Midori apparently. So, we’re going to watch out for that. But the other two, the the other kind of pointed thing is you were the lead in a Kyoto animation show and you were the lead in a Kyoto animation show. So, once again, very very very insular. So, yeah, excited. Very, very excited. And um yeah, hopefully some of the people in the comments that know a lot more about this kind of stuff can fill in the gaps production-wise cuz this thing, it’s the other thing I know about it. It’s going to be a production delight. I have this up here too. It was a key visual because I don’t really know what this show is about. I guess I know a lot about the production. I know a lot about the people that worked on it. Don’t really have much to say about the show itself. I’m going to imagine it’s going to be structured like Ninja Joe where it’s has some main characters that recur but it’s going to be pretty free form and you know take us in one direction over here take us in another direction over here niche was extremely broad everyday life my ordinary life everyday life niche Joe it’s a it’s a word I know that one uh this one’s just city in that same way it’s just going to encompass whatever being a city is and all the people within it if anything this is what this key visual gets across I mean The art’s fantastic. It reminds me of, you know, you get those carpets when you’re when you’re very young and you, you know, it’s got like the roads on it and you can kind of play with your Hot Wheels on it. Kind of reminds me of one of those. It’s very kind of childlike and whimsical. That along with the angle here, it’s giving kind of diarama. It It feels like a children’s thing, but in a really cool way. I feel like it’s going to be excellently produced and kind of getting that feeling across. Yeah. remember that um there’s the ED for Nichi Joe as well. That’s kind of giving me it’s giving me this as well. So yeah, interesting. But with that being said, I guess I’ll jump into episode one. I have grabbed the crunchy old stuff or whatever the official version is. I don’t know where it’s streaming, but it’s just the Arai Roars if you really wanted to know the exact version there. I will say I’ve been pirating my anime. Don’t tell anybody. Uh, Australia has made that harder as of recently. So, I’m going to need to jump through some hoops to get it done. I think I’ve found a solution. We’re going to hope it works. It’s yeah, frustrating. But anyway, uh, the other thing I need to do is thank the patrons. So, if you’re watching this publicly, the next episode will be up there ready to go already on Patreon. Probably should be two episodes if I have my [ __ ] in order. But, uh, yeah, $6 a month will get you episodes one week early. It’s linked in the description below. Have at it if you want it. It’s there. I think it’s going to be good and I want to know the rest of the story from there. I think so. We’re diving in here to episode one. Please be excited. Rightyo. Episode one up there. Ready to go. 27 minutes and 36 seconds on this one, so sync up accordingly with your own copy. It’s a little bit longer. I didn’t know that. We’ll find Yeah, you find out something new every day. That’s cool. I’ve also found out that it’s Amazon, so I’ll have the Amazon subs. So, again, it’s the official stuff. If there’s some secret squirrel business unofficial sub that’s way better, please let me know and I’m happy enough to change. Either way, there’s a picture and pitcher version in the description below if you don’t want to deal with any of that. Let’s give this thing a 3 2 1. Ready? 3 2 1 go. Long ago there was a bird. Well, that’s not advisable. Mhm. There’s a bird stuck in the thing. I mean, needless to say, it’s already immaculately produced this episode. Like, it’s actually nuts. It’s actually nuts. Holy [ __ ] Yeah, this show is in the trailer, man. Holy [ __ ] No. And the bed means nothing. Hello. You look spunky. Oh my god, this is putting me in such a great mood already. Oh yeah, bit of an adolescent theme there maybe. Oh my god, this is reminding me how much I I love the openings for um for Nichi Joe obviously, but this is giving me Dragon Maid just so unrelentingly happy. What’s going on there? It’s actually a 10. I don’t think anything’s made me as happy. Maybe ever. Mhm. Yeah. You’ll curse it. They can’t. No, I already know then. Well, you clearly do at least a little bit. Fantastic. That’s the lucky item. No, you got to you got to keep it on you to the person that says he isn’t superstitious. [Laughter] Who the [ __ ] you got to put on the mini skirt? Probably eating it. No, you got to use the thing for its purpose. Of course, it’s giving me Disney a lot as well. I was going to say about the font earlier. [Laughter] So, are they just trolling him? And they know he’s kind of gullible. Very well done. [Laughter] Yeah, they got his ass. [Laughter] I liked that shot there before with the phones. I thought that was great. Oh, who? What do you Who is Who is that? Oh, excuse me. Sorry. Itchy eyes today. Very dry. Who the [ __ ] are you? [Music] That’s a pretty good power. Okay. So, you’re the person that she wanted to send the message to before. What? Yo, you’re evil as [ __ ] Um, so clearly just best friends, right? The spotlight’s great. [Music] What is it now? Maybe more than best friends. Yeah, there we go. Very niche Joe holding hands. Everyone in the show is always skipping everywhere. What is this? What are these? Don’t go over there. Ah, yeah. Mhm. Kyoto Animation just loves to flex, don’t they? That’s pretty cheap. Yo, now they had phones. I was going to query what year it was. Prayer. Oh, no. Okay. What is the the the lines there were great. Who is this little little dog or rabbit or something? Okay. It’s always Yeah, we always have that little kind of closing city kind of frame. Um, yeah. Stop flexing. What the [ __ ] Stop. A struggling artist. What kind of artist? What is bummer material? He said editor. You would imagine Oh, okay. You would imagine um manga Not this guy. What’s he watching? Shogi and he didn’t notice. Crispy noodles. Yeah. You can’t just walk away. He’ll find out. Also, I love the way he tripped. That’s very realistic. If you ever wear kind of thongs or flip-flops, I I think you guys call them. Correct. Oh, the colors. Hello. Well, you didn’t consider that before. Yeah, whispering sweet nothings. I’m very much like that. I don’t like people like whispering. And what are we going to do? What if he’s already noticed? No. Okay. Oh, yeah. He’s already drinking a glass of wine there. Oh, this is fantastic. [Laughter] This is glorious. Uh owl. That wasn’t part of the plan. The animation. So, this can’t have been the plan. No. And is there two lots of ramen in his bag now? Oh no. What is this? Who was watching that through a camera? Who the hell was that? Okay, now this guy’s chill. It’s left a big dent. Oh, sorry for touching the mic. Yeah. Nope. Oh, it’s Yakisa, too. Excuse me. Yeah. What’s the dynamic here? Yeah. Okay, now I know what the resume was about. Huh? It’s your bag. Ah, we didn’t even have to worry. It’s not good for me, though. Yeah. Yeah. You were unlucky. Exactly. Wouldn’t have happened if you were still wearing the skirt, bud. Oh, and of course the other two just have no clue. We farted. What? Oh, it’s the camera again. Why is he spying on his own family? Where’s the I’ll break that all down. I love the dynamic here though, how everybody’s come together in the plot. Who are you? Okay. And you’re just happening by Wako Uzumi. I believe this was one of the main characters. What have you forgotten? Explain. You’re sniffing ink. What do you mean? Are they really just going to keep flexing like this the entire time? That was incredible. Oh, you had that little pet next to you. You’re a little bit odd. Okay. So, do you just keep mushrooms on you or Niche reference. So, you’re just in this situation. You have a bunch of gimmicks to just calm yourself down. What the [ __ ] are you doing? I’m praying to the mouse. What don’t you have in that bag? [Laughter] The hell is a point card? I mean, I can Yeah, there you go. Easy. Oh, handhold. Love the perspective there. That’s great. Yeah, he loves it. Oh, yeah. H pardon. What the [ __ ] is a pupper? Is that what you had the point card for? Yeah. Don’t put all your little gimmicks together. You’ll get too happy. It’s a really specific feeling, too. Do you have any like normal hobbies or is it just this Okay. She’s a bit strange. What was her name? Waco. She is a little bit [ __ ] Waco. They’re really struggling to keep it together. Okay, that’s great. And then it’ll kind of hit right on the Okay, now I understand. Thanks for the idea. Room 203. Now, was that the room next to her room? Yeah, I was about to say. No, no, we’re still going. I thought we’re rolling into an ED or something. No. Not the voice, too. If you know, you know. Got your ass. We put crispy noodles in somebody’s bag for Yeah. Oh, it’s actually productive. No, she she’s employed. [ __ ] give it give her a break. That’s just delightful. Yeah, great question. I Can we circle back around to that? She’s a very athletic. Does that explain Oh. Oh, what’s the point? What? I could do a better photo than that. And that was that was Waco who did that. Well, it’s interesting how everything’s connecting immediately cuz Nichi Joe, it kind of had two separate stories going on for a very long time before they joined up. Whoa. What? I mean, clearly she’s the best, right? Like, we all know that. Oo. Little bit sad. You’re looking for your thing. I want to become a Bronley photographer. All right. A little bit of heart here. I like this. Oh, well that’s not very specific. The most fun thing of all, pure power. Um, I really think that that last scene was quite important. Give me a bit of focus. Just a little bit. That’s all I need. And it was very good at doing that. Now, AD. Yeah. Longer episode always throws me off a little bit. Hang on. We’re doing something cool here. Bit of paper craft. Bit of claimation. Is it? Or is it just CJ? Little Diglett [ __ ] I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say it’s claimation, but it could just be CJ. I don’t know. Oh, that was glorious. That was the best thing ever. Uh, clearly I I just loved it. Um, it’s just delightful. It’s delightful in every way possible. It’s exactly what I was after. Opening and ending are fantastic, too. Just Yeah. Feels like Feels like Ninja Joe, but more. What if we made Ninja Joe, which is already an outrageously good production? What if it was even better? Uh, I’m not going to say there’s more characters yet, but I like how it’s all a little bit more together already. The comedy is obviously very similar. just Yeah, it’s been hilarious thus far, too. It’s been very funny. Oh, and we’re going to do this at the end. Okay. It’s nice to have a little bit of time just to unpack, though. Um, I’m unsure of who’s who. I got to kind of look that up a little bit more and kind of get a real grab on which voice actress is her. Obviously, I know one of them, but just kind of who’s the main characters. I don’t know. And everyone’s gay, too. I think that’s pretty cool. Yeah. At least I think they’re gay. They’re definitely not straight. I’ll give you that. In the future, we may just skip this stuff, too, if it’s going to be particularly long. Yeah, [ __ ] that. Bye. I did think 27 minutes was very long. Turns out that there’s a good almost minute of that which is just extra credits. Cool. Uh I think I’m going to put together the picture and picture and come back here a little bit later tonight. I think that’s the idea. But um I mean again just very very good. Very very happy. I’m loving it. It’s very very good. And we’re back. It’s the next day. Episode one of City the Animation in the Books. Uh please excuse me because I’ve already recorded this intro once and then my computer bluec screened. Awesome. So, I may be a little bit more brief than I want to be, but I’ll circle back around to my, you know, point that I put in that 8 minute intro that I recorded. Anyway, um, it’s really good. It’s obviously really good. It put me in a fantastic mood yesterday. Obviously, again, I meant to come back last night and record. It didn’t pan out that way, but yeah, still really like sitting in the brain really well. It’s yeah, it it made me a happy person if only briefly. I guess I have two major points coming out of this thing. Why is it so good? Cure animation is one of those big points I would say. The best studio in the business is hitting it out of the park. Once again, this production is stellar. The colors, the line work, the animation, the flourishes everywhere. It’s all just 10 out of 10 type stuff. There’s a very specific unique art style to it as well. obviously again getting a lot of those character designs from um Arawi’s manga, but again channeling them into their own thing as well. Um again, I would imagine there’s lots of little kind of animation specific kind of touches here and there that are giving, you know, the the the kind of scenes on the paper a little bit more life and and whatnot. I’d say a lot of the production stuff helped with the I guess you would say the lack of focus in episode one. um city. The animation by kind of, you know, by definition is going to be pretty broad. We’re talking about an entire city. We’re talking about a lot of characters. We can kind of see them during the opening there. The kind of animation and the quality of the kind of overall product really helped me get through what would otherwise be something that’s a little bit unfocused, you would say. I feel like we come around to a genuine theme by the very end, though. um something akin to, you know, young adulthood, you know, college age type stuff. Um kind of this in between point between, you know, adult and child. Kind of the art styles doing a lot of the heavy lifting there. Building this juxosition between, you know, these characters that are meant to be in their early 20s or whatnot with something that would be on television for children, you would say. Especially with the tone of the coloring as well. You can see it here. It feels like something that would be aimed at 5-year-olds. But I say, why don’t more things aimed at adults have colors in them? Damn it, I like colors. So, yeah. But again, it’s like, okay, these characters that are that are clearly in this step and moving on to the next thing in their lives. Clearly, that character Midther uh not really wanting to take that big step into whatever’s next, not really knowing what her thing is, per se. Still maybe clinging on to a little bit of this childlike wonder we can see through the animation. But whatever it is in the future, it’s going to be fun. We’re going to keep a kind of childlike sense of innocence to it all. Childlike sense of wonder. Uh kind of channel that into whatever we do. Feels like an adventure. It feels like, you know, I’m stepping out into this kind of brand new space where there’s all these interesting people. It feels like being a kid where the world’s very new to you. Kind of. Again, I really enjoy this part in the opening where we kind of get across that concept in a really succinct way. Where’s the part where they’re dancing? Yeah, this kind of stuff. So, hey. Yeah, it feels like we’re on stage. It feels like we’re performing for everybody. It feels like all these myriad characters in this thing that we’ve just kind of brushed by or touched or had some interaction with, they’re all kind of looking at us in some way to move on and be the next step in whatever’s next for the city, the world, whatever’s else. Like it feels like we’re the main characters, you know? And instead of putting on this really precise and really technical and really kind of gifted performance, instead we’re just going to kind of drift off this way for a little bit. Drift off this way for a little bit. Just kind of doing it at our own pace. And again, if I I if that’s not kind of a microcosm of the themes of the show, then I don’t know what is. We’re just going to kind of do it live. It’s kind of like what being in your 20s is like, I guess, a little bit. Just kind of drifting, feeling it out. I don’t know. It just feels like it’s getting that feeling across quite well. Yeah. Uh and that’s a summarized version of what I spent 8 minutes before talking about. So good. Uh let’s move back to the start of the episode now where we have the story about the bird which I feel in of itself is another example of this kind of metaphor. Right. So this bird’s going to come on in. It’s going to be you know thrust into all these different situations throughout history. Um, it’s all kind of culminating and leading up to this thing only for that thing to be a rugpool where it’s like, well, I don’t know if any of this was important at all. Again, it’s like we’re just doing it. It’s It doesn’t need to have significance elsewhere. It doesn’t need to do anything else. It’s just kind of like a thing that happens. I don’t know. Am I making any sense? It feels like it’s very evocative to what I feel the show is about based off of only one episode. Let’s put it that way. The eternal rockbird, it kind of crashes into this giant pylon of stone coming out of the ground and then turns into stone itself. It is then used, transforms, manipulated, abused into many other situations throughout history. Many other opinions of society upon it, but in the end, it just kind of didn’t really amount to anything. I don’t know. The bird is kind of like the main characters. That is kind of my my my little theory, I guess, where it’s like, hey, we’re the center of attention. Everyone’s looking at us. We need to have some kind of significance. Otherwise, why else would we be telling the story and then it’s just kind of like eh and being eh is just kind of okay. That’s kind of the that’s kind of what we’re trying to get at, I think. Holy animation, too. I’m going to need to just yeah, put out a blanket statement right now. This thing is produced immaculately. Like I’m not going to pause every time there’s some piece of animation that’s blowing me away because I’d be pausing every two seconds. Now we have the opening. We have some lyrics. I might run through do the lyrics first before coming back and noting a few specific scenes. Uh circling once again back around to that dance scene. I really feel like it’s the most potent and kind of joyous moment of the opening. I would say where it reaches kind of fever pitch. Hello dear friends. I remember the days we spent talking about our dreams. It’s hard to become an adult. Let’s go find the thing that we kept hidden. Throw away your cluttered mind. Swim in the clouds. Raise your head and run out right. The rain has stopped. Sing along. Hold hands. I laugh too. You laugh too. I’m sure like this. We’ll meet again. That’s kind of just it. It’s pretty simple in the old lyric department. I feel like getting at a lot of the themes I was talking about already as well. Hey, it may be stressful this point in your life. Just kind of slow it on down. Do your own thing. If we focus on the reasons why we’re kind of the way we are, the thing that we kept hidden is an interesting line. Um, then I’m sure we’ll be okay in the end. Seeming seemingly a bit of a photography thing as well. Maybe that’s going to be a unifying aspect for everybody. I mean, just I haven’t really talked about the song. The song is just it [ __ ] hits you, man. It gets me kind of emotional. No, I don’t know. Yeah, it just the the stress evaporator, we’ll call it. It’s It’s good. It just There’s something about it, isn’t there? There really is. I’m feeling kind of I’m feeling kind of [ __ ] choked up about it. It’s good. Maybe everything is going to be okay. We’ve got a little bit of that kind of I guess you’ll call it multitracked kind of higherend female vocal stuff, too. Uh, you know, lots of horns. That’s why it was giving me Dragon Maid. But yeah, just unrelentingly hopeful, joyous. It just makes me happy to be alive. It’s good. I mean, the visual components, I mean, you kind of what you see is what you get. I guess there’s a few little references to the various characters that will be as part of the show. Uh here we have um her name escapes me and her little friend. Um yeah, so I don’t know. You you get little tastes here, I guess, is my point. For the record, this looks quite interesting. I don’t really know what’s going on there. This was the other one. You’re very like Lady Oscar almost in the hair department. Something about the sparkles, too. I’m endeared to you. I want to see more of you, I feel. And yeah, the little chef mascot. You kind of see it uh there kind of going into this scene here. It’s kind of um I guess you’d say the mascot of this restaurant that seems to be one of the main unifying factors of the show thus far. Um, you know, kind of Midy is getting a part-time job here. We kind of set a few of the conflicts in this episode here. The mini skirt, the barkle, the stuff with the champagne. So maybe it’ll maintain being a thing. Again, I was kind of comparing it to Niti Joe in the reaction, which kind of has kind of two separate stories going on, if you know what I mean. you kind of got all the main school stuff which is bonkers and then you’ve got kind of Nano and Haka and all that stuff. Um where again those stories do meet at some point but they’re kind of their own separate thing. So I’m wondering if we’re going to you know make everybody come together and kind of be part of the same thing a little bit earlier here or we’re just gonna going to do whatever. It’s you know it’s hard to say I guess off one episode. So yeah, first skit here. Um, I don’t know. It’s a thing about he’s really superstitious and like concerned with horoscopes and stuff and um, we know that we can use that to manipulate him to do certain things. He finds out his lucky item of the day is a miniskirt which propels some comedy of course because oh, he’s wearing a mini skirt. It’s it’s it’s strange. It’s weird. I don’t know. It’s giving siblings which is the point. It’s giving that he’s the butt of a lot of the jokes here. Um, there’s been two skits where he’s been involved. He’s been the butt of both jokes. I liked how they were connected, too. We kind of referenced the miniskirt stuff later in the episode. Um, it made it feel like it was the same day, which was kind of the point. It was, you know, I appreciated that. But yeah, it seems like again, he’s just going to be the butt of the joke. I don’t know. I don’t know how I feel about that early on. I guess we’ll wait and see if there’s a little bit more dimensionality there. Of course, one must wear the lucky item, too. It’s not enough to just again the example use here is what if the lucky item was like a food, right? You would eat the food. So you got to do whatever the use case is of the lucky item to get the effect on it. I don’t know. Horoscopes be crazy these days. I don’t I I wouldn’t put it past them. I guess this is Tatwaku. We’re going to start to get some names as we roll through here, too. I liked a bit of the silhouetting here. It was giving me Disney, which is probably another pretty solid um inspiration here. Of course, Kani taking inspiration from a lot of different sources, not just Japanese animation. So, it’s it’s kind of what it was giving me. It’s a little bit in the hand designs. It’s almost like Mickey Mouse glove type stuff. That as well as um there was a font choice for the logo, which looks quite Disney as well. Just kind of the the running writing on the uh the animation there. I feel like this here is is the best representation of the dynamic of whatever the hell is going on here. just these two watching in awe as um Tatawaku just does whatever they can manipulate him into doing. Right. It’s amazing that he put on the mini skirt. I do like his little pirouette. I thought that was quite adorable before. Of course, we’re just going to laugh at his ass. Thought this was a great shot here, too. Um screams manga panel to me for some reason. Um yeah, just you know, got the whole film crew after him making sure that every moment of this embarrassment is recorded. Not a lot of um musical instrumentation stuff. There’s been some some builds and whatnot. It was one of my curiosities coming into this uh first episode, I guess, how we would do the music, but it seems kind of just whatever. So far, it seems pretty good. I didn’t really notice it, and that’s probably a good thing, too. It’s just kind of fitting. This is Matsuri here as well, just as we’re still continuing to get names. There’s going to be a ton of characters here, so it’s going to be quite difficult. Next up here we’re talking about superpowers, I guess. What power would you want? And this is Etchan, of course. Very, very cool. Um, we’re discussing money shooting out of your hands as a power. Uh, and then very obviously you go for the anti money shoot out of my hands power. Just something to counter whatever you did. So, if you want infinite money essentially, then the ability to turn all of that money into counterfeit bills so that they can’t be used is my power. I want to thwart whatever you’re doing. Now, if you’re reading between the lines like I am, that’s horrendously gay. Holy [ __ ] you’re obsessed. My superpower has to be something intrinsically involved in yours. Specifically, despite you, that’s the gayest [ __ ] I’ve ever heard. Are you kidding me? Just great great little touches everywhere, man. It’s what a show. There’s fantastic cuts all through this scene, too. Like um there was one here where she just kind of turns around like right here. Just Why does that look as good as it does? I’ve got no clue. But it does. It looks fantastic. Getting a nice little bit of texture here as we get to a pseudo confession. What I really want isn’t a superpower. Instead, it’s you. The flower petals, the the sparkly chimes in the music, the um the spring in their step, the love hearts in the background. Just it’s wonderful, isn’t it? It’s just swell. before we turn that confession into a Before we turn that confession into whatever the hell that is. I don’t know, some kind of judo throw. That was the closest we got to a lot of the Nichi Joe stuff which was just completely out of pocket like fighting moves out of nowhere. That was kind of that show’s bread and butter. And anyway, we’re blaming that on the sumo club and then we’re the go home club champions and we’re both the winners of the championship. Nice little laurel there, too. It’s just I don’t know. It’s very charming. It’s good. It’s It’s kind of tough to say anything else about it. It kind of just is what it is. I know. Everyone’s very like like squashed, you know, like like Duplo, you know, like like like those like like really like kitty Legos. They’re kind of like that a little bit. I don’t know. Like kind of the ones that um uh kind of big enough that you aren’t going to swallow them. Like again, it’s for children. It’s for like like toddlers. And it feels like um again very tangibly like we have them all out on the mat and we’re playing with them on kind of the floor. That’s the feeling I’m getting out of the uh the animation which would have to almost be intended, right? Like the synchronization of their walking there too. Just it’s all just very good. I don’t know. Very different kind of what’s the word? Perspective from these characters that are literally children that are literally in high school, right? versus our young adult characters which are a little bit more like, “Hey, I better actually start switching on and looking at this stuff a little bit more. When you’re a kid, it’s okay to goof off. When you’re an adult, it’s less socially acceptable, I guess.” Yeah, we’re kind of very good at circling back and and kind of reiterating jokes here because we go off to the temple and we’re now having some very cheap juice whilst Matsuri here tries to think about money shooting out of her hands. Once again, I think maybe the idea is you were trying to bum a juice maybe and then you were also like I’m also out of money and that’s why we’re both trying to kind of shake and manifest this thing that or you’re trying to kind of channel your power which was to kind of make all your bills counterfeit. So, it’s just kind of circling back around to what we were talking about before. Either way, they’re two peas in a pot. They’re doing the same old thing. I don’t know. I’d like it if it was a little bit they’re both kind of cheapkates because that’s kind of a thing that rolls into our other characters as well is that they’re kind of cheap. Um especially towards the end of the episode. Yes. The the the the artist the the mangaka guy. I don’t really know what this was. I think it’s an extended joke about how he’s about to get fired. I believe and I think the connective tissue here is that this apartment 203 is the one that’s next to Midori, I believe. So, we’re going to circle back around and see if that’s what happens by the very end. Otherwise, again, this is very disconnected and I’m not really sure where it impacts things. Amazing shot through the door. Kind of pee hole, though. I thought that was very, very well done. Not a peepee, not a pee pee hole. That’s something else. Not a a hole which you peep through. A peep hole, I guess you would say. So, yeah, that kind of is the first introduction of those two characters. We’ll circle back around to to the artist and the editor. First, we got to talk about Midori Nagumo. Midoriy Nagumo rose off the tongue, of course. So, Midori, she she goes to this restaurant, which is the restaurant we’re at at the very start of it. I don’t know why there’s a suit of armor over here, but anyway. Lots of little interesting stuff in the backgrounds, actually. Um, anyway, I’d imagine this is one of her first shifts, put it that way, because it’s like she kind of mosies on in, but kind of knows what’s going on and already knows the owner. I do love this trip here because it’s very realistic. Um kind of if you’re wearing these kind of sandals or flip-flops or something kind of kicking one right there on that um kind of edge of the ground. If I can ever grab it. Oh my god. Just right here. Just that little kind of slip there is is like if you’ve ever wore those shoes, that’s a very specific detail because that’s how those shoes would work. Anyway, the Yaki Soba goes in the bag and we assume it’s Oldmate’s bag, but it’s not. And that makes everything okay a little bit later. Okay, I recognize this guy. This guy was in the opening. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So, we got a bit of a shogi thing going on for sure. And he’s just kind of watching it on his phone. I would like for the show in the future to move a little bit more towards this direction. Just something immediately gripping at the start of a skit, I guess, rather than just kind of getting into it. Like, okay, this one’s very focused because we got to find a way to make sure that this guy doesn’t notice that we put the noodles in his bag. And if he does notice, then we’re going to make sure that everything’s okay with him and we got to like bribe him with the champagne and whatnot. The other reason I say it must be not the first shift is because they seem to have a little bit of a rapport. Of course, um, of course, Midi opting to run away. The owner doesn’t have that luxury. We’re in this together. We’ve both been witness to this. What’s the plan? Kind of on the back of that. So then we go from there into whispering sweet nothings. Again, there’s just there’s so many good touches. It’s really hard to even talk about. Like this moment here was great. Like um again, saying that we must trick him. Something so obvious that it woke me right up. This was probably the musical moment of the episode. We kind of cuddle the dialogue and just kind of let it play out almost in a Looney Tunesque sense. We’re just kind of the comedy is all very visual. It’s it’s just a disaster what happens. So, very quickly, Midoriy brings over the the bottle of wine that we got and says, “This one’s on the house.” Um, the chef quickly prepares a meal on the other side of that, a replacement meal to make everything okay. But yeah, we pop the cork and it goes directly into his forehead. And not only that, as we’re bringing the meal over, the shock of seeing the cork go into his forehead also ends up with more Yaki Soie in the bag. It’s basically the worst thing that could have happened. Holy [ __ ] We need to look at that shot again though. Holy [ __ ] Is that a good 3D shot that we have there? Um the Qani glaze. It’ll never stop. Okay. Can we talk about creeper granddad guy? Um he’s got like little little guys here too. He’s got a lot of stuff going on. So I’d imagine that this is this is a family patriarch and he’s just like, “Okay, these [ __ ] doofuses are hilarious, so I’m going to put a camera in the bag and just kind of see what happens.” But my question is, why can’t you just walk out there and look yourself? Maybe you’re a little bit reclusive for whatever reason. Sure. And um as we find out, this makes sense because it’s um Tatawaku’s bag. That kind of connects very well. Okay, that’s fine. Anyway, for some reason, his headphones are going to explode whenever the mic is um kind of compromised or the camera is compromised or anything. So, sure. This guy’s great. He’s um who’s that uh that that Street Fighter character? He’s giving me that guy. Yeah, guile. He’s giving me guile a little bit in the with the hair. And he seems pretty chill. Uh, blissfully unaware seems to be his character trait thus far. Unaware of the giant crater in his forehead. Unaware of the noodles going into the bag. Um, just kind of focusing on whatever’s in front of him. I’m imagining his name is also Dr. Adatara because that’s what comes up here before he’s introduced. Oh yeah, I forgot about this quick dynamic as well. So, you’re very thankful that she even showed up. So, you looked like the kind of person on the resume that wouldn’t show up to a shift. Oh, he just kind of upon seeing her is very excited kind of slides in along the floor. Okay, this could be cute. I don’t know. They could they could be a thing. Or not even like a romantic thing. Just like I don’t know. These two personalities mesh in a really cool way. At least to make comedy. He’s just very extra and kind of anxious and over the top and stuff. and you seem pretty chill about the whole thing. So then, yeah, we find out it’s Tatawaku’s bag. He throws it, it blows up the camera. There’s there’s a lot going on. And once again, I I do love how everything connects here. We try to blame the fact that there’s two servings of Yakisa in his bag or the fact that he isn’t still wearing the mini skirt. If you were still wearing your lucky item, of course, these bad things wouldn’t befall you. Even though, again, both were entirely my fault because they tripped. And then the kicker being that he’s still wearing the miniskirt regardless under everything. So, it kind of been the lucky item. I don’t know. I I I like how it circles back. I feel like that’s um really fun. And of course, these two know none of the context. It’s comedy. It’s It’s funny. You You guys can laugh. It’s good. And a nice rule of threes there as well as he dams the magazine in the first place throwing the entire thing which has I don’t know another camera on it resulting in the entire setup here blowing up out the back again. We we kind of introduced him spying initially and then we blow up his headphones then we blow up the camera then we blow up the computer. It’s all just rule of threes you know you didn’t expect it it’s weird to say well written about a show like this but it kind of is. I don’t know. There’s there’s a there’s a poetry to it um in that it’s very uniform in that way. Yeah, it just this is the perfect end point for whatever that comedic sequence called for. And again, I want to heap praise on Qani, of course, but the the original material was doing a lot of the heavy lifting there in the comedy department. It’s just it’s flawless. It’s very, very good. Now, Waco WCO perplexes me. She eludes me right now. Um, I get the feeling that her whole thing is that she’s just kind of a vibe. She’s just kind of vibing it out. So, my understanding is that she won a lot of money from the photography contest that was recently a thing. So, she’s kind of loaded. Uh, even though she’s doing the whole point card thing and she’s lost her point card and that’s kind of why she’s doing all these weird off-kilter kind of things like sniffing ink. That just completely came out of nowhere. That killed me in the reaction. So, I think that that’s why she doesn’t like have a job job and she just kind of takes pictures of stuff. I don’t know. She’s just kind of doing it live. Oh, this was one of the best sequences of the episode, too. Just this very quick kind of look up after sniffing the ink, thinking about how, you know, that smell has permeated through my life. How it’s kind of, you know, made me the person I am today. And kind of reflecting on my past through that, just kind of all these memories rushing past a mile a minute. All these different character designs for Waco. little vignettes here and there, little different situations at school that we’ve been in. Just this one thing that’s kind of, you know, that’s kind of calming me down in these times and lets me reflect on my past. I don’t know. It’s it’s kind of really like thoughtful and cool and stuff like emotional almost. I guess the joke as well is that her past was a little bit generic, so it’s unremarkable, so it didn’t really calm me down thinking back to my past. Um, I’m just kind of very cookie cut as it stands right now. um moving forward, I need to do something much greater with my life. Of course, themes of the show instead of touching mushrooms or whatever other [ __ ] I’m doing. Oh yeah, also shout outs to Yui Ishikawa. Um I wouldn’t have called it from this performance here and now. I feel like she gets typ cast a lot and this is very much not that kind of character that we’re doing here. Um [ __ ] Akito Toyosaki was so easy to spot too during the latter portions. Holy [ __ ] Uh, but yeah, voice acting across the board obviously fantastic. It’s, yeah, it’s a highlight. It’s a Q&A show, of course. It has good voice acting. We’re praying to this mouse deity to give us the point card, too. I thought that was quite novel and made me chuckle. So, yeah, if any character just kind of represents just kind of doing it live and not really, you know, basing it on anything with any merit, it’s probably Waco. Um, that whole sequence there was just all the different weird little things that she does to make everything okay. The touching of the mushrooms and the putty eraser and the everything, right? She’s a bit [ __ ] weird and she just kind of goes with the flow and everything kind of works out in the end. She found a point card, so you know, more power to you, I guess. Wonder if this cop guy will come back, too. We kind of touched his hand briefly and he seemed interested, I guess, to to put it lightly. Oh, yeah. Is this is this character? I feel like this is character. No, cuz they kind of bow to each other. So, they at least kind of know each other. Oh, no, no, you’re in room 204 where again, old mate, the artist is in 203. Okay, it’s all coming together. I guess because it got proven that if we continue to do weird little, you know, um what’s the word? Almost like good luck charms that I have in my pockets. Uh good things will happen because I found my point card. Then I guess I’m going to keep doing it. That’s why we continue down this route. Anyway, I really like the idea of of touching the the part like you stretch it out and it’s just kind of the filmy part in between. Once again, just like the sandals from before, it’s it’s this really kind of lived in thing that I like. It’s a feeling that you can really see um without, you know, actively experiencing it. And I don’t I don’t even know what a putty eraser is, but I can kind of feel it, you know? It’s um I don’t know. It feels like somebody’s done that before, I guess. Once again, these guys are just like, I don’t know, something about a bummer a joke. He’s about to get fired. This is going to be the last issue because you’re kind you kind of suck at this. I don’t know, man. It eludes me this this segment. I guess struggling artists is a theme. You could squint and see that. Sure. It’s fine. There’s some good stuff here with the What are these things? They’re they’re in kind of traditional kind of Japanese gardens and homes and stuff. It’s the you know, you know the thing. It makes the sound kind of matching the water flowing there with the artist’s eyes. I thought that was a nice touch. And also, yeah, this thing is um it’s profile picture central, too. Um I’ve seen quite a few that I would like to um screenshot and potentially use in some online spaces. So, yeah, shout outs to that. It’s almost um toolled to uh to the current generation in that way. Um yeah, I don’t know. It’s good faces. Good faces on this thing. Oh, yeah. at the end here, of course. Um, the one thing I wanted to see was, okay, where do we live? So, if that’s room 203, Waco’s in room 204, are we in room 202? Cuz that door is kind of the same color. Why else would like The other thing I’m trying to get is is are you the same character that was meeting her there before? Not necessarily. You got the pink going on, the hair going on. It’s not It’s not a one one. Maybe it’s hard. I don’t know. It makes it a lot easier if these characters are neighbors to get them all together is my point. This is another one where the skit kind of is off to a great start by just starting with something preposterous. Like why the [ __ ] are you on the floor photographing broccoli in your underwear? Like that doesn’t make any sense to me. But it’s also it’s intensely themes of the show. This is some [ __ ] You if you’re 30 and you’re doing this [ __ ] jail time. If you’re 20, completely acceptable. And of course, this is Nikura. I don’t know why I need to keep checking names. They’re not kind of sinking into my head as good as I’d like. I mean, by default, she’s my favorite character because she sounds like Yui. Like, which is Toyosaki. Like, by default, it’s like not even fair at all. She’s the best. Clearly. Clearly. Oh, I love the scam here too from um from Midori. Um again, I got this staff meal. There you go. Let’s enjoy it. Oh, dinner’s sorted. Fantastic. And then, hey, thanks for the thousand yen because I’m I’m poor. I’m cheap. I’m a [ __ ] 20some. That’s how this goes. Once again, connecting very well. You’re explaining the little story about what happened today. We spilled a ton of yucky so wasn’t good. They both went like whoosh. Again, us the audience. We know that. We saw that. Um, rewarding. I don’t know. Just kind of centers this. It’s good. And then you got a flex on her, too, because you went to university. Yeah, you ought to go to university, too. Come on. What are you doing with all these kind of odd jobs that you’re doing? That’s not that’s not living. That’s not the plan. You know, why are you doing that? Another thing I like, you’re not very excited to talk about university, right? But you’re very very excited to talk about broccoli and the photography that you were doing. Um, a lot of character in the animation, too. Um, I like the bounce up out of this pose into whatever the hell this is. Very dextrous, very athletic. I’m just going to I’m just going to glaze the voice acting, too. It’s It’s so good. But anyway, we don’t need to keep talking. She runs rings around everybody. Like, it’s insane. No matter what she’s in, she’s Anyway, like one of the few like star star voice actors we have in my opinion. Like, ah, I don’t know. Maybe I’m out on a limb there, but it’s just true. Just absolutely kills it in whatever the kind of role calls for. Kind of like um who are some other voice actors like that? Probably Megumi or a few others. just like really recognizable um and never gives a bad performance. How about yes me? More yes me in my life, please. That’s just fantastic. But because we’re very money focused, we don’t care about the photo being in the magazine. But the grand prize, it’s worth this much money. Hey, what if we win the grand prize? That’d be good. And if this is the photo that won the grand prize by Waco, of course, then surely any of our kind of photos can win it as well. we might as well get in there and start taking photos straight away. I do like how we spin off of this whole camera debug, the whole I want to steal the camera, I want to use your camera to win the grand prize type thing into discussion about our dreams and kind of something akin to a genuine message by the very end of the episode. I just felt like that kind of worked well. And holy animation as well, love that art style shift. Love the coloring there. Like more than anything else, I’m amazed that you have something that you seem like you know that you want to do. You know, it was probably the closest thing we’ve gotten to something genuine. I guess like like you’ve actually found the thing. I don’t feel like I found the thing yet. Um whatever it is, it’ll be fun. I’m sure of that, but I don’t know what it is yet. I don’t know. That’s relatable. That’s good. That’s some good stuff. And yeah, spinning that question back around onto Midory. I want to do something fun. Well, I guess you should do something fun. Just kind of shocked at the non-specificity of it all. Just kind of like flumxed by it all. Like very funny. It’s going to be the funnest thing of them all apparently. And that’s so pure it just makes me cringe. And then yeah, I mean that kind of closes the day on the city as well. We kind of started the day before we kind of went to school. Um, we kind of opened up on a very kind of sunrisey kind of bird type thing, too. I don’t know. It’s giving me like a full day at the city. It was nice. It kind of winded down towards the end. There was some nice kind of sunsetty stuff towards this kind of portion of the episode. You can kind of see it a little bit there. Um, gave the episode some nice structure, too. just kind of like over the course of a day starting with kind of morning routine stuff over here, eating breakfast, you know, getting ready um before progressing through a workday and then kind of, you know, afternoon into evening kind of conversations. I don’t know, it was something I didn’t notice on the first rewatch or first watch. And that kind of really stuck out to me. It’s another nice thing. I wonder if we’ll kind of maintain that kind of motif. Uh ending’s kind of this claimationy really pretty kind of little thing. I don’t know. Um, I might look at the lyrics a little bit later on, too, because I’m I’m running out of time here. Turns out when you kind of record [ __ ] 10 minutes and then your computer blue screens that, you know, it’s kind of a disaster and kind of ruins your timing. Anyway, sure. We’ll leave it there. We’ll talk about that ED a little bit more. Love that opening though. Holy [ __ ] Uh, I’m I’m in love. I think I think this is a fantastic show. I feel like it’s kind of being like underrated. know like on MAL it doesn’t have a super high score or nothing but I saw nothing nothing that indicated to me that this is anything less than a stellar stellar show one of the shows of the year off the first episode that again this this my taste as well love me some slice of life me some Kioani but yeah just very very happy with it very very very very happy with it so yeah we’ll leave it there um next week’s Should be two episodes. It’ll be down there in Patreon below. Anyway, uh like the video, subscribe, all that other kind of stuff. Tell me your favorite part of the episode of this episode of City the Animation. I’d love to hear it. So, but yeah, with that, we’ll close this out. Thank you for watching. Catch you next time. Ciao. Bye-bye.

CITY is Animation-ing all right.
Some highlights from the sakugablog article:
There is no Series Composition credit. With the script writers being in-house, Arawi simply attended all the writing meetings himself. He is also handwriting the credits in OP & ED.
Much of the together-ness in Nichijou was KyoAni's doing.
The douga is done entirely with brush pen.
Amazon subs seen good, except when signs/text show for a fraction of a second then get replaced by dialogue. Aside, the English dub seems pretty well received too.
This anime gives me both happiness and sadness at the same time. It's llke looking back at the past you cannot go back.
Thank you for posting this to finally give me an excuse to watch the show lol. Of course it's peak, no surprise there. Nichijou is one of my all time favourite animes, and IMO the best outright Comedy anime there is (not that there is crazy competition). The big step up in animation between Nichijou and this kinda floored me, especially since Nichijou is already a gorgeous looking show, but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised given the 14-years in between them, KyoAni propably has way more tools to cook with now. Anyways, probably gonna go binge all the currently released episodes now because of how good this was.
