If you've seen Princess Mononoke, I think the "Curse God" thing is what happens to the Boar gods in that movie. They get corrupted by their own negative emotions and turn into monsters that attack everything around them. Interestingly, Ashitaka in the movie gets touched by one of those monsters and it also leaves a permanent mark on his skin not unlike what happened to Yoshiki when "Hikaru" touched him while out of control back in episode 3.
I remember reading the manga… I was SO FRIGHTENED that "Hikaru" couldn't do anything against the phantom… that omipotent deity seen weak and defensless for the first time… crazy. I felt so in danger myself…
