He began fencing in the third grade of elementary school, and achieved his first ever third consecutive Inter-High School Championships in history. He was the first Japanese person to win the individual Fleuré silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and the Fleuré team silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. In 2016, he became the first Japanese director of the International Fencing Federation. After serving as chairman of the Japan Fencing Association, he is currently a member of the International Olympic Committee Athlete Committee and CEO of WIN3 Co., Ltd.
