  1. Hello, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the Bocchi The Rock Rewatch.

I presume the ones that don’t participate are introverts like Bocchi 😛

What really can be said about this show? It’s hard really to put into words. For what amounts to a music show, it really is a breath of fresh air. Why? Because unlike a lot of other music shows, it’s less about the music and more about the characters and the comedy.

When it originally came out, I wasn’t planning on watching it. It kinda flew under the radar at first, probably because I like a lot of people thought it was your generic show in a similar vein as Love Live or Show By Rock. But then clips started to circulate of the show and I said to myself “Alright. I’m gonna have to check it out.”

One of the best decisions I made in the year 2022.

I’m really excited to host this rewatch because I think it’s going to get a lot of engagement. People look back fondly on this show, and I think there’s good reason why. It should be noted that I’m coming off the heels of the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is renowned for its dialogue and how clever it is. Bocchi I kinda view in a similar light, and as we’ll soon see it can be just as infectious.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the sub, by the way.

I saw a wrestler last night burn another wrestler’s house down on TV. And people want to tell me wrestling isn’t cinema.

    Nijika drinking water

It is Summertime, and both her and Kita are going to Bocchi’s house.

It looks like Bocchi is holding a confetti blaster.

Ryo isn’t here because she says her grandmother took a turn for the worse.

Lol, she’s just at a store listening to music.

    Ryo the queen of excuses

Oh my God. Ryo is George Costanza [](#forgotkeys)

Aww, Bocchi has a banner and everything

At least Bocchi was nice enough to greet them.

Everyone just standing there not saying anything.

At least Nijika and Kita know her heart was in the right place.

    A trendy bag

    And a movie

    Lol, Chez Gotoh

She really did went all out

And now Nijika and Kita find themselves in a horror movie, it feels like.

Little sis showing off the picture of the band she likes.

I love that the dog is named Jimihen, obviously named after the famous musician Robby Krieger of The Doors.

Barley tea seems like such an old-fashioned drink.

Little sister wants to hear the Munions song on guitar.

I didn’t even know there was one. The song, that is, not the musical instrument.

Yes, that classic Munions song Happis

I do love seeing Kita bonding with Bocchi’s little sister. And Nijika bonding with the dog.

“A five-year-old and a dog have better social skills than me.”

One of the realest lines of the entire series.

Bocchi saying she can’t whoop it up if her sister’s here.

And she is able to bribe her with the promise of an ice pop in the fridge.

Gotta come up with t-shirt designs

I like how this whole time Bocchi is still wearing the party hat and glasses.

Damn, Bocchi’s parents actually asked if her friends are imaginary.

Honestly, Kita’s shirt isn’t the best

And now Bocchi is freaking out because she heard the term “Sports festival”

“Sports festival: the number one source of school trauma for introverts.”

As someone who identifies as an introvert, I can tell you it isn’t sports festivals. It’s group projects.

Oh man, I absolutely love the claymation segment.

And now we get an imagination sequence where Bocchi is trying to avoid the Sports festival.

“Wow, this week’s Bocchi Time lasted through the whole commercial break!”

First time I believe the show has broke the fourth wall.

And now we get Bocchi tied up about to be burnt at the stake.

The underlying irony in all this is that Bocchi always thinks she’s being targeted and yet, if she truly wasn’t the center of attention, this wouldn’t be happening.

Little sis showing Bocchi’s parents the existence of Bocchi’s friends.

And now they’re being treated to a meal.

Bocchi seems to still be affected by the sports festival, but karaage brings her back to reality.

I have to say, the episode being set in Bocchi’s house is pretty cool.

Oh my God. Now the dad is asking if Bocchi’s friends are from some friend rental service.

They really can’t believe their own daughter made friends.

    “I can’t say it doesn’t sound like something I’d do…”

    At least Bocchi is self-aware

Even simulated a game of Twister, her parents admit.

I do like that you can really tell that everyone here legitimately cares about Bocchi. It makes things feel really wholesome.

They’re even going to all watch a movie together.

Bocchi doesn’t know what to make of this development.

Still gotta design the t-shirts though

“Heartwarming seishun movies: the number-one source of movie trauma for introverts, by genre.”

And here I’d figure it would be horror movies.

Lol, Ryo sent her idea in and it’s just pictures of food poorly photoshopped on a shirt.

Nevermind, she was just asking them what she should have for dinner XD

Oh boy. Bocchi has a design of her own.

And she still hasn’t taken off the party outfit.

That’s a lot of chains and zippers

Thankfully, she doesn’t hardly know them.

Now Nijika and Kita want to see Bocchi try on her clothing that her mother bought her.

    Aww, it actually looks adorable

    Bocchi The Cute

And because Bocchi’s forehead got touched, she is turning into ash.

I guess this makes her Bocchi The Ash instead.

Nijika and Kita dying now as well

And we see little Bocchi spirits floating in the air.

I think you can point to this moment as when the show directly shot up in popularity. This is a very detailed Nausicaä reference and from what I know, Nausicaä is extremely beloved in Japan, so this moment in particular really went viral after it aired. Coupled with all the other moments that were trending at the time, and the show quickly became water cooler talk.

**Ran out of space. Part two in the replies.**

  2. **First Timer**

I really should’ve expected Bocchi’s over-reaction to her friends visiting, but somehow I didn’t. Or at least, I didn’t expect just how far she would go. And, once again…Bocchi’s kid sister is a *savage* little thing. xD An easily-bribed one, too!

    Well, she *is* five.

And *of course* Bocchi’s parents didn’t think the ‘friends’ were real. They’ve heard Bocchi’s excuses before, all such claims have been dismissed.

…Bocchi’s *entire family* are trying to steal the poor girl’s friends. And she can’t bribe her parents the way she did her sister…at least Mama Bocchi knows how to handle this.

Her dad, not so much…well, at least it turned out again.

Until…*the fashion show*. Poor Bocchi, being reduced to ash…but yeah, she did look cute.

*Why* does that feel like a reference? Nausicaa with the poisonous ash/pollen/whatever?

    Heh. Pity about the weather.

  3. At least Nijika and Kita’s visit to Bocchi’s house went better than when I visited my best friend’s house. Who knew he was the Crossword Killer?

  4. Rewatcher! Episode 7 To Your House

“I brought some sweets and a movie I like,” Kita

“Hey! You didn’t forget why we’re doing this, did you?” Nijika

I feel this episode does a great job at highlighting the difference between Kessoku Band’s two extraverts. While Kita and Nijika seem very similar on a surface level in my opinion they’re the pair with the least close ties. Bocchi obviously has had emotional connecting moments which each of the girls while Nijika and Ryo were already close friends and Kita is obsessed with Ryo.

Something about Kita I’ve been waiting to mention for a while now is that you’ve probably noticed she is the only one in the band to not call Hitori, Bocchi. Instead she uses the more formal Gotoh-san. Similarly, she refers her seniors as senpai and even uses Nijika’s last name Ijichi instead.

In comparison, Nijika immediately calls Bocchi by her first name when they met in the park and after Ryo gave her a nickname she switches to that. In my mind that shows how Kita cares more about social conventions, especially since in Japan it’s more polite to first use someone’s last name when initially meeting them.

Kita instead of Nijika was also the one to bring Bocchi’s family a little gift bag to thank them for hosting. That’s quite the socially minded gesture. I’m not trying to imply that Nijika is rude, but that it was an intentional choice to say the gift was only from Kita.

Furthermore, circling back to the quotes I pulled out from the start of the episode Kita and Nijika have slightly different priorities from visiting Bocchi’s house. Nijika I’ve always seen as a more goal oriented person which is the ideal type to be a leader. She went over today with the express purpose of designing a t-shirt for the band. While I’m sure Kita cares to make that happen eventually her bringing the treats and movie show that her first desire is to socialize and have fun.

Before when we’ve seen the girls doing various activities in their free time when Kita isn’t with Kessoku Band she’s almost always socializing with her friends. In comparison, while it’s mentioned Nijika has friends she had over for her first concert the scenes we see of her are of her at home cooking. BTR could have easily shown Nijika having fun with her friends too and , but by only showing Kita out socializing it shows how Kita probably has a bigger social battery. Kita feels like someone who would die if forced to stay at home for multiple days in a row.

Lastly, as I alluded to earlier Nijika is much more of a planner than Kita. As we saw after their audition she already has a dream that goes beyond simply playing at the Budokan which already would be a huge achievement. She has the dreams and ambition of a protagonist in her own right. Not only that but she breaks that dream into smaller goals like working towards preforming live again at Starry and today creating a t-shirt to tie the band together. She truly gives the band needed direction.

Kita on the otherhand is someone who more lives in the moment. Her original motivation for joining the band was because she developed a crush on Ryo. Just from that she had the nerves to join a band without even knowing how to play the guitar. She truly has the guts to follow her emotions for better and worse. Yet she backs up that willingness to jump head first with a dedication to work hard even after the novelty wears off.

Both Kita and Nijika are excellent extroverted characters and it feels like such a treat for someone extroverted themselves to have different forms of extroversion well represented in a show still primarily about a girl with social anxiety.

For me I lean for towards being more similar to Kita which is probably part of why she’s not only my favorite character in BTR but also one of my favorite characters in anime.

  5. ***Socially Anxious Rewatcher***

Missed yesterday, but I’m back now!

The only things I wanna bring up from Ep6 is that I completely forgot what a complete trainwreck [insert drunk ladys name here] is and that I absolutely adore that street concert. It’s one of my favourite moments of the anime.

    But now Ep7

In case you have forgotten, this is a 4 hour round trip for Nijika and Kita. So it really isn’t a given that they’d visit her

[Oh god, she went way overboard](https://imgur.com/a/P64wRlD)

    [Futari Jumpscare](https://imgur.com/a/054tvCq)

[God damn kids horading all the social skills leaving nothing for the people that need it](https://imgur.com/a/hZl6XWe)

[But at least you can bribe them!](https://imgur.com/a/RjzX853)

T-shirt design time! At least that’s actual merch

    Kita’s design gets a 0/10

[Whoever came up with this idea should get a promotion](https://imgur.com/a/vTMRmRP)

    [Random 4th wall break](https://imgur.com/a/wEIA05w)

“See, they exist!” They had so little faith they had to go check. That’s honestly kinda sad

[Food is way bring Bocchi back to earth!](https://imgur.com/a/NqENi8E) Nijika and Kita should remember this

[Now that’s just rude and uncalled for](https://imgur.com/a/rQhnYHO). Same with the photoshopping

    [Chekhov’s gun loaded…](https://imgur.com/a/AIX43mR)

[I don’t know what to do with you Ryo](https://imgur.com/a/3GzDRQs)

I could totally see Nina from Girls Band Cry rocking Bocchi’s T-shirt design, maybe a few zippers less, but still

    [Good job, you killed her](https://imgur.com/a/KnKZ0P8)

[The worst thing? I want one](https://imgur.com/a/LHp5840)

    […and fired](https://imgur.com/a/Q4qs3YW)

I absolutely cannot wait for the next episode!

    **Questions of the day**

    1. I haven’t had someone over in years. I couldn’t tell you even if something happened

    2. Yes, I am actually

    3. I’m not even gonna pretend that I know what bottle cap episodes are

  6. **Rewatcher**

This episode felt pretty laid back and minimal on the music content which is a bit of a first for this show. I liked it a lot though, lots of good slice of life stuff going on here.

Kind of reminded me of the episode of Nichijou where Nano has her friends over for the first time.

It was honestly pretty sweet how much effort Bocchi put into setting her room up for her friends.

This episode has my favorite change in animation so far during the sequence where Bocchi is freaking out over the idea of sports festivals. The stop motion stuff there and the sequence right after were both really cool.

The part where it inserted real life pictures of food during Ryo’s weird message to them was also a fun bit of mixed media.

It was fun getting to see Bocchi’s family interact with her friends for the first time. They seem supportive of her even if they had to check if Bocchi was renting Kita and Nijika first.

The part where Bocchi suddenly turns into a pile of ash was probably my favorite joke of the episode. That scene was kind of interesting since it’s one of the few times where other characters acknowledge the weird cartoony things Bocchi does.

That scene was also a Nausicaa reference which I appreciate because Nausicaa might be my favorite Hayao Miyazaki movie.

There were also a lot of great smaller gags throughout the episode too like the T-shirt designs.

Next episode looks like it’ll be about Kessoku Band’s next performance so I’m looking forward to that one.

    **Questions of the Day:**

**Have you ever had someone over at your house? If so, what happened?**

I feel like I have friends over a fair amount. We usually just talk.

**Are you surprised people can actually see the things that happen to Bocchi?**

It’s a comedy series so I don’t think about it too hard. Can’t remember if they ever acknowledge Bocchi doing weird stuff like that again though.

**Which bottle cap episode did you think was better: This one, or the last one?**

I think this episode had better jokes but the previous episode was better with the music and character development elements.

  7. **Socially anxious rewatcher!**

Ah, having friends at your house. A big step for Bocchi!

Bocchi’s sister is still a savage, and her parents think her friends are imaginary. At least Mom knows karaage will snap Bocchi out of her funk for a bit.

“This weeks Bocchi time lasted through the commercial break!” What fourth wall?

I bought the figure they made of the claymation zoetrope Bocchi. She sits on my desk as my spirit animal.

Evaporating Bocchi infecting the others with her Bocchi-ness is probably my second-favorite joke of the show.

    > Have you ever had someone over at your house? If so, what happened?

When I first moved in to the place I’m living now, I had my friends over and we played Dungeons & Dragons. For whatever reason, I volunteered to be the DM that day. I’d never run a game before, but I guess I was in a particularly good mood when I suggested the idea.

But then after everyone said that was a great idea, my inner Bocchi stepped in, and I spent weeks worrying myself that I was going to suck and everyone would think it was lame.

But it went great and everyone had fun.

    > Are you surprised people can actually see the things that happen to Bocchi?

    I love it, lol

    > Which bottle cap episode did you think was better: This one, or the last one?

Oof, don’t make me choose. I liked the plot of yesterday’s episode more, but this episode was brilliant in its zanyness and references.

  8. Rather perfect timing, because I’m watching the second recap movie later today so good thing I’ve watched until episode 6.

Ah. This is when they’re visiting her for the first time.

    Kita _really_ loves Ryo.

Yup time to decide on a performance outfit.

    And here’s Futari.

Those are some fancy glasses for barley tea.

    Bocchi’s melting…

And now they’re meeting her parents.

They seem to be having fun with her parents.

That tornado is going to be inconvenient.

And so now they’re going to have a fashion show of Bocchi.

Yup, we’ve never seen her in her uniform before.

And so now she’s gone, reduced to atoms.

That’s a basic but fine shirt.

    Questions:

    1. Back when I was like a kid yeah I had friends come over all the time to hang out and play video games.
    2. Definitely, because it felt like it was all just for comedic effect.
    3. Bottle cap episode?

A note about the music: Not much music, so I’ve got nothing to say.

  9. **Rewatcher**

Missed last thread so posting my EP6 thoughts here too. These were both really great episodes! I loved Kikuri’s introduction and Bocchi gaining her first two fans. She’s really been making good progress on stepping outside of her shell and progressing as an artist. The ending though where they believed she lied about selling her tickets was pretty funny though. This episode was just hilarious in general, a nice chill episode before they have their first concert. Yet again the anime has just been improving on the manga, esp with this episode. A lot of the scenes with Bocchi’s family and them hanging around her house just straight up do not happen, like all we mainly see is the shirt designing, Futari first coming in (but not leaving), and Bocchi’s turning to dust as the main points. It’s been a blast seeing the differences between the two.

    **Questions**

    > Who is the strangest person you’ve ever met before in your life?

Some family friends I don’t care too much for.

    > How big do you think it is for Bocchi’s growth that Bocchi was successfully able to perform in a public setting?

Gigantic, look at EP1, she couldn’t do anything without a mango box over her head.

    > Have you ever had someone over at your house? If so, what happened?

A few times, just a friend I’ve known since high school. I was more anxious as a teen so I wasn’t the best at inviting school friends over nor wanted to impose lol.

    > Are you surprised people can actually see the things that happen to Bocchi?

It’d be hard to *not* notice her having a mental breakdown.

    > Which bottle cap episode did you think was better: This one, or the last one?

Oh this one absolutely, the last one didn’t feel as much like one

  10. FIRST TIMER

The funniest episode thus far, I knew when they were going to Bocchi’s house, not much would go right. I’d consider Mr. and Mrs. Gotoh to be the highlight of the episode. They really rolled out the red carpet and made them nice food and snacks on a dime but they were beyond embarassing. I’m surprised Bocchi constantly thinks of every worst case scenario but never thought of her parents embarassing her.

Bocchi’s room decorations and party outfit were hilarious! At first I wondered why the house had an empty room Bocchi was able to hold her “party” but it seems she just thoroughly hid everything in her room and put her bed and desk god knows where. Making a banner outside was strange too, they didn’t really indicate what it was made of, like was it paper or like a white sheet Bocchi ruined 😀

I think it does make sense her parents acted really embarrassing though; unlike most parents of a teen, they’ve never hosted their kids’ friends before so they’ve never had Bocchi chew them out for being embarrassing and never learned to behave somewhat appropriately in that circumstance. Mr. Gotoh asking if they were hired friends of some sort was the best 😀

I was also really surprised when Mrs. Gotoh expressed surprise that Bocchi’s friends weren’t a hallucination and she’s aware of her daughter’s mental problems. I had thought that the crazy things we see in Bocchi’s head were more just thoughts expressed creatively within the context of a show but she does seem to have a more serious problem.

One thing I thought was weird was that Bocchi still wears her track suit in the summer. I thought maybe she lived somewhere cold but they said they live in the Kanto region, which is the greater Tokyo area and it gets very hot there in summer. Also weird is that Bocchi said her mom buys her clothes but wasn’t that outfit she changed into just the regular uniform for her school? It looked a lot like what Kita and the other girls at school wore.

I thought the Ryo subplot was also funny that she was sick of her friends and apparently spent the day alone at a record store and restaurant by herself. I was surprised she had money for a restaurant :p. Nijika also seemed to be wise to Ryo lying and making excuses; that’s messed up that she says her grandmother is near death tho

    QUESTIONS

    1. When I was a teen, yea quite a bit. We did usual stuff like talk, watch TV, play video games, shoot pool, play pinball etc
    2. I’m still not so sure they can. Although Nijika texted that Bocchi died, I think it was in jest and was symbolic. It is weird to think though like if this were a live action show that had no narration from Bocchi, she would just freeze or fall on the ground quite a bit and it would really be disturbing.
    3. IDK what a bottle cap episode is but i liked this one more.

  11. #Rewatcher

Nijika and Kita go to visit Bocchi. Ryo always has an excuse to not do things.

Imaging outfits and Bocchi is still in the box.

Her room falls apoart and Futari comes in to tell the band about Bocchi.

They find her cute and she starts to steal them from Bocchi.

Futari is easily bribed with ice cream to leave them alone so Bocchi mental state doesnt further deteriorate.

Mom and dad are surprised the band actually exists and isnt imaginary.

Kitas shirt brings out trauma for bocchi with another style of animation used. She melts from letting her brain run wild.

They break the fourth wall with referncing commercial time. Once again Bocchi jumps straight to death for being an introvert.

Kita and Nijika are very supportive of Bocchi and her bocchiness.

The parents really have no faith in Bocchi making friends.

Now they are embarrassing her in front of her friends.

Ryo’s designs for the shirt was hilarious for wanting to know what to have for dinner.

Bocchi design was so out there with so many zippers and was weirdly practical but no one else agrees.

Bocchi wears normal clothes and is so frightened. Nijika brushes back her bangs and she just disintegrates. She then spreads her curse and takes out the band. Everyone gets cursed and the family calls for an exorcist.

We get the design of the shirt and its very simple but nice. I even managed to get one from a convention.

Two days to the convert but a typhoon looks like it is going to ruin it. Bocchi is really worried and wants to be extra safe. The band agrees and it didnt matter as it rains heavily on the day.

    QotD

Only have had neighbors over as a child and we mostly just played vidoe games.

its funny how Bocchi just doesnt exist in her head.

  12. StardustGogeta on

    **Rewatcher**

    >No cooperation, no life!

Everything about that whole segment is so good.

When I watched this the first time, I hadn’t yet watched *Nausicaa*, but now I have and can appreciate that reference. Hooray!

It was nice to get some Bocchi focus yesterday, but I really do like the band member interactions too. In fact, this episode is a great example of one of the reasons I love this show: despite her anxieties and her eccentricities, Bocchi’s friends and family truly care for her and want her to be happy. That bit at the end, where she pleads for the band to go through with making the rain charms and they all go along with it, is extremely touching.

    Questions of the day:

    * I have had people over at my house, for video games, movies, and the like. Not very often, though, and as hosts go, I’m roughly as awkward as Bocchi.

    * Well, I’m a rewatcher, so not much surprises me. :-P As for when I first watched the show, I think I generally just adopted the mindset that anything goes, since Bocchi can die in one scene and come back in the next.

    * In terms of sheer enjoyment, I’d say I like this episode more. Yesterday’s episode might actually be more important to the overarching plot, though, and would probably be the one to keep if you had to cut out one of them.
