FYI, the official info on the film gave the math and confirmed that the normal Galaxy couldn’t carry the full weight. So the canon is that the wings are carbon-reinforced to stop them from snapping, and the plane was carrying only half the fuel to save weight.
Saunders used their fleet to do mid-air refuel TWICE in order to bring the plane back to their hangers. And then they had to repeat that feat to send the tanks back to them.
By the way, i did the math myself too when the episode aired and came up with the same conclusion. So the production team did their homework.
