The characters van be fun, but it feels like their arcs can be really hit or miss. Same for the romance.
I think Gray was my favorite character simply cause he seemed to be the one actively struggling the most.
Yet his romance with Juvia never really seemed to get done properly… And from the ending his character felt… I dunno, like the author didn’t want to go all the way with his arc of losing people he loves that save him.
His teacher sacrificed herself to save him, Ultear did the same, his father did it, too, and BRIEFLY Juvia did as well.
But nothing was done with Juvia surviving.
Gray didn’t save her, Lucy did.
And Gray trying to sacrifice himself wasn’t prevented by Juvia, it was prevented by Natsu.
In the end their romance felt… Tacked on. And Gray’s arc of losing people felt unresolved to me. To the point I think it would’ve unironically been better if he wound up with Ultear. Would address a lot of his troubles and resolved them in a better way, I think.
