Where did you guys live. No-one who liked anime got treated like this.

90s kid here, and I’ve never seen people say that. At most, older people will say that it’s “Just a phase”.

As a 90s kid, I’m not sure anyone even knew the term “anime” back then. I feel like you had to be pretty deep into it to come across it. Media distribution back then was very different. I’m not even sure the first time I heard that term. Maybe the early 2000s? Toonami was a thing but I’m not sure if that block ever used the term. Back then, we just thought of them as cartoons and by their show name. You wouldn’t say “I’m an anime fan.” You would say “I watch Dragon ball, Sailor Moon. Pokemon.” Or those crazy mature cartoon movies like “Akira.” We watched those dubbed in English. We took them as cartoons. We probably didnt even think of them as Japanese cartoons. I’m not even sure we called Princess Mononoke anime.

We/they walked so they/we could run (I grew up when anime was niche and now it’s mainstream)

Nah, during the 90’s Dragon Ball was a huge thing in my country, even my grandma loved it and would leave work early just to watch it.
Oh and she also like Sakura Card Captor and Inuyasha

The problem is when the tourists encounter echhi/loli shows and want to cancel them

You weren’t called weird for liking anime. You were called weird for using their techniques in recess and Naruto running everywhere.

I think it’s because of marvel. It was a gateway into nerd culture for many of my coworkers.

All of us 90s kids in my highschool actually all loved anime except the try hard gangs and I was a popular kid because I was the best baller of the school. No one denied Gundam Wing, escaflowne, Inuyasha and dragon ball Z was the shit. Where I was it was the YTV channel in Canada. Toonami was when I was visiting my cousins in Rhode Island.(Of course there were other animes but they were not as popular in the school)
